NO CARRIER
PHILADELPIA, PA

NO CARRIER, or Don Miller, is an educator, programmer, and live visualist currently living in Philadelphia. He reprograms nearly obsolete videogame and computer hardware, for use at live music events and installations. He primarily codes for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Commodore 64, creating visual works that incorporates both new and recycled symbols and patterns. His work simultaneously speaks to the emerging DIY technology culture, and the reminiscence of a generation raised on interactive media technologies.

Miller recently performed at Blip Festival 2007, an international gathering of forty musicians and visualists from around the world. In 2007 he designed and programmed the first NES albums ever to be released on game cartridges, for chiptune musicians Alex Mauer and Phlogiston. Most recently his work has been seen at Colgate University's EcoArtTech, the 2008 Sperm Festival in Prague, and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

minusbaby, born Richard Alexander Caraballo in New York City, is a musician, designer, photographer, and wandering, beat-collecting international vagabond, whose finely-crafted blips and bleeps are as eclectic as the broad range of music and culture he draws inspiration from. Focusing primarily on software-based composition, minusbaby uses lo-fi electronic synthesis to create chip music that defies genre classification. Everything filtered through the ears and fingers of a musician looking to push what chip music can display stylistically, and what people will experience when they hear it themselves.

Bong-Ra, Jason Köhnen’s electronic alter ego saw life in 1996. Hailing form The Netherlands, Bong-Ra initially started as a dj, but quickly focussed his priority on producing his own music in 1997.
Djax Records signed Bong-Ra in 1998, proceeding to release the debut album ‘New Millennium Dreadz’ and the 12-inch series ‘Darkbreaks’ Volumes 1 and 2. In 2001 Clash Records (a hardcore jungle orientated 7-inch label) was set up. In that same year John Peel invited Bong-Ra to do a ‘Peel Session’ which was released on UK label Deathsucker Records. Several vinyl releases followed in the period between 2001 and 2003.

From 2001 to 2004 the ‘Breakcore a Go-Go!’ parties were run and organised by FFF and Bong-Ra becoming one of the first (bi) monthly regular Breakcore nights in Europe. ‘Bikini Bandits, Kill! Kill! Kill!’ the second full length album was released in 2003 on Supertracks Records. In 2006 a special 4 track remix EP of Venetian Snares’ ‘Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett’ and the debut of Bong-Ra’s main side project The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble were released on Planet Mu (UK). The politically charged album ‘Soldaat van Oranje’ was released on Sublight Records (CAN). Bong-Ra returned for his second Lowlands Festival, becoming one of the highlights of the Festival (according to Dutch magazine OOR). A second European tour and split 12-inch with Enduser ‘The Kill’ and a memorable muddy Glastonbury Festival highlighted 2007.

END.USER is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic electronic music. This Cincinnati, Ohio-based breakcore/raggacore/jungle musician Lynn Standafer has received support from BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and a list of DJs too long to fit on a one sheet. Releases across many platforms have built him into a juggernaut. A usually prolific artist, having recorded for Hymen, Ad Noiseam, Sublight, Cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off, working on something very special - his debut album on Ohm Resistance. Standafer has released on record labels including Mirex, Ad Noiseam, and Outbreak. He has also played in various countries around the world and at festivals including Maschinenfest and Distorted.

bit shifter
New York, NY

Bit Shifter explores high-energy, low-bit music composed and performed on a Nintendo Game Boy. The result is an unapologetically fun foray into an evocative and distinctive soundset, executed on a console generally misperceived as being technically limited. Made possible by Oliver Wittchow and Johan Kotlinski's respective home-brew Game Boy musicmaking programs Nanoloop and Little Sound DJ, Bit Shifter's music ados and subverts the playfulness inherent in the familiar Game Boy soundset, repurposing it into the service of novel idioms. Based in New York City, Bit Shifter has performed over one hundred shows worldwide, having recently circumnavigated the planet in a 20-date world tour with fellow chiptune compatriot Nullsleep.

Edenflux first made Industrial and Acid Breakbeat in the early nineties. He was kidnapped by a pack of rabid strippers at age 18. “It was my first time living without Mormon adult supervision.” One of the strippers’ boyfriends owned a noise label. Noise soon fused into his Live Trip-Out Freak-Out Sets. Owner of 'Label Haters' with 2008 release of 'Money Money Money,' Edenflux loves using drum machines, vintage synths, and destroying stuffed animals.

bit'R'chip is a colab between LameBoy http://myspace.com/lowgainaudio and Unicorn Dream Attack http://myspace.com/unicorndreamattack. Only bit'R'chip has hit light speed. Combining circuit bent instruments, children's toys and modified video game consoles with 8bit audio sources sampled into an Akai MPC2000 ... they are pushing back boundaries in the micro world of lo-fi music. Some of the most entertaining music to watch and listen to. bit'R'chip sends a message to all that 8bit doesn't have to just come from the the usual suspects, it's how well you work your imagination!

environmental sound collapse is the current recording/performing alias of Kevin Gondek. The name environmental sound collapse was adoed for his experimental electronic music in late 2001, the style evolved out out of samplers, synths, computer software, sequencers along with multi-effect units. Over the years, environmental sound collapse releases have ranged from spacey, ambiance to digital noise 8bit (nintendolotry, BTR8). Live shows have been rare: a result of day jobs, video work, ex-girlfriends, video game obsession and numerous other distractions.

For nearly 7 years, SphereX (Chris Phatic), has been producing genreless, aleatoric, atmospheric, and sometimes hard, loud, and obnoxious live material.
The music evolves with every new track SphereX creates the only thing constant is the belief if it can't be performed live for a crowd, it takes away the enjoyment of making it in the first place. When SphereX throws down some sounds, expect to hear a wide variety of material. Tech Gurus which is located at 75th and Parallel in Kansas City Kansas sponsors SphereX works.

The music he makes is often times called "8bit" or "chiptunes"(there are many other names but these are the most popular). There are many many ways to make this music. Some of them include using live sounds, trackers, or midi inputs on vintage computers(like Commodore 64), game systems(like a Gameboy or NES), old Casios/Yamahas(like vl-tone or vs-30), and circuit bent toys or non-bent toys of all kinds. Unicorn Dream Attack is another artist making steadfast on his own path.

welcome and thanks for posting this.

Looks like it will be a great event. Wish I could come, but I won't be able to.

Please post announcements for such events a little sooner in the future.

Best of luck. Very Happy

(I added this event to the electro-music.com calendar and moved this topic to the Concerts and Festivals forum.)
