Found car stereo speakers Subject description: Can I use these? |
 |
|
They're Lightning Audio, that much is clear, but I couldn't find it on their web site. They're meant for use in cars, but I'm wondering if I can use this in my studio, and what I would need to do so. Or maybe just use with my TV and get blown away during movies.
I found this in someone's trash pile, believe it or not. Sometimes picking through the "trash" in my neighbourhood is like going shopping. Sometimes what gets thrown away isn't just in good condition, but practically new.

Nice find - stick em in your car.
I would not put them in my studio - I'm fairly particular about the response for my monitors. Those things are just designed to go "boom-boom"
If they fit the decor of your living room (!) I s'pose you could use them for the TV... My wife would have fits if I got them near her 'decor'.
That's just my opinion... only cause you asked.

Maybe keep the enclosure, but almost definitely toss the speakers and replace them. Green ethos is good, but I'm sure there's a reason those got tossed. Flea market speakers sound like garbage, the tears of the Honduran children who make them ruin the cones. Those are also probably blown from having blasted much rap.
edit: Just hook them up to an amp like you would any other speaker. |

| I found that one speaker works. I replaced the wiring. Easy peasy. The other speaker does not. Anyone know anything else I can check before I toss it out? |

If you can get a cheap'n'cheerful speaker replacement, I'd say "Keep 'em." If yer on a tight budget, and yer studio surroundings allow, having some thumping boxes for groove work might not be such a bad idea, just to see what kind of grooves them boxes can inspire! _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. I just checked and I can actually replace the same speaker, new, for $60, and I'm sure I can simply get a different brand of the same size and comparable quality much cheaper, or even free.
Not a bad deal! Too bad the schmo that threw it out didn't know half the set was still working. Or maybe his wife got sick of him and his stupid loud rap in the car all the time and told him the woofers go or she goes. If so, he at least made an adult choice. |
