I want to start messing with synth sounds and music. I have been playing guitar for almost 20 years and while I still play, I want to do something different. One thing is learn the piano.

But with all the different equipment I use or want to use I feel its time to get a mixer set up. Not so much for live music, just to do the things I want to do at home.

I guess what I really want is a stereo monitor setup. Here are the things I know I want to use through it so far.

Mic or line input from guitar amp.
Mics for drums and vocals and whatever.
Inputs to run analog synths
Inputs for MIDI and computer recording along with listening to Software synths.
Be able to listen to movies on TV. (NO surround, not enough room for that).
Not sure what else yet.

I know I want at least eight channels input and a four buss out. I dont really want to be tied to a computer to be able to use it.

I am also thinking about getting a KORG EMX-1 to fool with so I want to be able to use that.

My budget cant go over 700, and really would like to stay below 500. Used is not a problem and actually would prefer it for equipment that hasnt been out for more than ten years.

I prefer equipment that has been well proven, and go for durability over feature packed stuff.

It doesnt have to be powered either, I can get a stand alone power amp for that. I see them all the time in the local pawn shops.

Also, I cant stuff a 32 channel mixer the size of something you would see in Frank Zappas home studio either. No more than 2.5 feet wide if possible.

Thanks for any help.

Well nevermind,

I scored a small mackie to get started with. A 1202 VLZ pro.

I didnt think real hard about the midi either. I dont really need a midi controlled mixer right now.

Now to find a cheap power amp and some cheap monitors.

1202 VLZ is a good choice, actually IMO.
