Digital Multitrack vs. Cheap Computer ??? Subject description: thinking about getting one or the other any suggestions? |
|
|
I was thinking about recording a little again. Mainly I just piddle around, but thought it would be cool to do some recording. Anyone own any of the lower priced digi multitracks. Like the Fostex MR 8/MK II? Wondering how they are. I didn't read anything about EQ's for the tracks and that concerns me. I figure I could get a halfway decent comp for about the same price. But I already have a crappy Comp I've recorded on and its fine for how crappy it is (900mhz) but its kind of a pain and big. I have a four track, but I have like 3 suitcases of tapes for BITD. I'm not super picky, but I don't wanna waste my hard earned duckets.
So how bout some pro and cons, or experiences. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

Hey Zebra!
It's a question I too have been pondering- except I already have a shlaptop
Logic Audio was a great tool, until I went and got a Macintel- now it looks like I've gotta spend another £200 to get the upgrade
I've been toying over getting a secondhand Yamaha MD8 for a while. Digital and utterly reliable, but also with a built in fully-featured analogue mixing desk- very nice
My mate Jim has got a little digi 8-track. He loves it. Just turn on the compressor and wham!
The problem with going the computer way is that, although there are some really nice freeware DAW's out there, like Reaper for eg, the additional hardware is well costly (although it has come down in price somewhat since China adapted the ISO 9001 standard- good news for all of us!). But the humble multitracker shouldn't be overlooked. Having everything in one box is the real clincher for me as I already have enough junk as it is
I quite like the look of the new Zoom H4 |

Seems to me that you need a computer any way. Why not put your money where it is the most flexible? _________________ --Howard

Don't listen to Howard He's got the dollar!!
If you need a cheapo computer get an old PC (mines a Dell, on recommendation from Jan) or an old Mac (Logic Audio 4.x or Pro Tools free).
I've made more music with dedicated hardware than a PC- I always end up on the ruddy internet!!!! |

Thanks guys, Yeh MOSC you would need a comp too. But like I said I have a cheapo that could handle, dumping, mastering, burning. Theres so many pros and cons. Buy a good computer you can do all kinds of apps: Music, art, internet, blah blah. Multitrack is small, portable, one trick pony. But if I get lazy on the recording the mutitrack is useless. I can still use the comp though. Well I'll have to ponder a little more. Or I could just impulse buy. AHHHHH _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

I'll reply on that V since you laid it down while I was typing. First ha ha , mosc has got the coin. Yes you can get cheap dell's at the Uni (usually around 50 bucks for about 1mz), you gotta fight of all the nerds though. Or my bud told me MicroCenter has refurbs for about 250 300. I just can't see myself spending more than that on a computer. I don't have internet at home and I work in a printshop. So I can do all the artythings right here. But I would be hard on myself if I bought hardware then got lazy and didn't do any recording. I got the bug though, currently have the sequencer running "Death of a disco dancer" and its so fun and funny to play. I wanna do a little demo. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

the other bummer about computers is they ain't very portable- and that includes schlaptops |

Well, I dragged out the old comp against my better judgement and almost got it hooked up last night. Just need a few wires. Just to calm the recording beast in me. It's just so darn space consuming. I think I might check out one of those Fostex M8 things. For 200 bucks thats not bad. Maybe I'll see if anyone comments and then post specifically about that model of digicorder. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |
