NL3 OS Update? Subject description: Can we expect anymore? |
|
|
The current (1.2) Nord Lead 3 OS is pretty solid IMO and it's been out long enough that it would seem like it will be the end of the road for OS updates for the NL3. I'm not really looking for anything in particular to be added to the NL3 (simple reverb/delay might be nice) but what do you think the possibilities are of an update ever? |

I'm not really into the NL3, but I think I read somewhere that it's out of production. This could mean that there will be no further software developments. _________________ Jan

Thanks for the welcome.
Clavia seems to still show it prominently on its site and you can still buy them new (or so I thought) too bad if true...those endless rotary encoders are the best implementation I've seen. |

There are some NL3 in stock over the world, although the rack version is hard to get, these days. The production stop has to do with European regulations about using lead in electronic circuits.
The endless rotary encoders are indeed wonderful, so Clavia will use these in all new designs (if useful)

Interesting. Is there any information on this online? Is lead normally used in circuits - I guess I never thought about it. I presume these regulations are relatively new then? Any more details? |

Solder is, or rather used to be, a mix of tin and lead. Pins of components used to be plated by solder as well. Apart from that lead was used in some plastics as well. So even when modern leadless solder is used the components themselves could contain it as well. Some componenets are not available as leadless.
The regulations have been announced a few years ago and became effective in I think july 2006. Japan had bee using leadless solder a few years even before that.
It's not only lead though that is banned, it is general ban on hazardous substancs in consumer equipment. There are some exemptions for military or mediical use, as well as for products where there is no alternative available, like for car batteries.
When you want to know more about the subject try to google for "RoHS compliant". _________________ Jan
