Interstitial - Solitude |
|
|
This is the last track from the 'sub.terra' release (http://www.foundrysite.com/subterra/). It's a remix/recycle/rework (whatever word you'd like to use) of my original sub.terra trumpet track and the four remixes by Vir Unis, Vidna Obmana, Saul Stokes, and Michael Bentley.
The first half is basically a build up of drums and trumpet, vidna's fujara (overtone flute), etc... slowly building and evolving until hitting a peak and then dropping into a long drone for the last half of the track. The main trumpet line reappears near the end.
16:33 in length. Almost 20 mb in size (if you don't have broadband I understand if you don't bother downloading this!).

I recorded the original sub.terra track playing 5 different trumpet tracks into a pair of microphones - and then processing (mutilating may be a better term...) those takes into a somewhat darker soundscape. Then the four artists took my original tracks and created something new with them - none of them knew what the other was doing. To wrap up the album, I created Solitude to tie all the pieces together.
It was a phenomenal experience for me to work with everyone and to hear how they interpreted the trumpet into their own work. The pdf booklet on the Foundry website (the first link) has nice comments from everyone involved. |

Broadband connections are worth the money!
This is a great piece. I was all wired up and starting to feel frazzeled. This piece certainly took me down a notch. Very beautiful. Bravo...

Thanks - I really appreciate your comments and taking the time to listen.
I think that took me around 5 months to complete - some lag time in there with family things - and just letting it sit for awhile to make sure it was really going where I wanted it to go. A couple of the earlier paths the track was taking were a bit humorous looking back...
The whole album took 18 months from first note to release. |

Thanks on the horn/whale sounds comment. I've been told my trumpet playing sounds like "mutant whales" at times. Most of what you're hearing is played with some of the valves pressed down 1/2 way - and I'm sliding up or down off of notes using my lips and air. The 1/2 valve technique mutes the sound a bit also.
The track "endless coral" on my album with Vir Unis called Live at the Miramar also has me playing trumpet in this style - although a bit more pronounced on that. The track is here:
http://www.interstitial.info/music/miramar/
Should be the 4th one in the list - 9.1 mb in size.
These are the only tracks that I've recorded so far with trumpet. |

wow! cool, if I had not been told I could think of some kind of synth sound instead of a "real" trumpet _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Endless Coral - The reverb and delay isn't too heavy on that - I'm running through my Boss ME8B (Bass multieffect pedalboard) for reverb and a Korg SDD-1200 dual delay rack. I think I got really lucky on that - it just sat in there so nicely with what John (Vir Unis) was doing with the grooves and synths. There's a couple of spots where he mimics what I'm doing underneath that really shapes things nicely. For the most part - that whole live set just worked for us - we'd rehearsed twice before doing the show - and it's almost entirely improv (the two rehearsals and the show were all totally different...) - heck - he even swapped out the drum grooves on one of the tracks on me and I wasn't expecting it at all... totaly shift of the feel of the tune. I'm actually playing bass most of that show (that directory has all of the tracks) - and doing synth on a few tunes or both synth and bass. Trumpet is only on that tune.
sub.terra/solitude - just a wee bit of Alesis Wedge to fatten things up. Once those are layered in with everything else going on though - the whole feel of it shifts a bit.
I really appreciate everyone listening - thanks.

Bill B. at Wind and Wire just reviewed sub.terra this month:

It's a nice review. |
