Hi,

This is a synth that you can make as complex as you want.
One can build it with one, two, three or four SID chips.
I'm currently going for the quad-SID version. You can edit
it completely by sysex by midi, or -like shown on the picture-
with a complete front plate were ou can edit the parameters
and you can see what you're doing on the LCD.

The C64 exists in 2 versions, the old and the "new" version.
Both SID chips sound different. The older one has got nice
dirt in it, and artefacts in the sound, the newer SID chip
sounds cleaner, warmer. They both run on a different voltage.

The SID chip is mounted on a Perf board with the compoment
onit. Each SID board is controlled by a Core board, which contains
a PIC chip that has to be loaded with the Mios-operating system.

The SIDchips can be chained, 1 2 3 or 4 SIDs.

The PIC chips I got for free from the microchip.com website
were you can order 3 samples from 5 different chips. 15
in total. Free shipping worldwide.

The search for the SIDchips is quite difficult, and since
you need only the SIDchip from the C64 it's better to find a
broken C64, cause I believe when I threw away the C64s
I heard them cry...

Kind regards,

Freakydile

Axel,
Welcome to our site.
What a great project you're getting into. I spent a lot of time looking at that site. I'm into hardware sequencers. I designed and built one a few years ago.
Great stuff using the microsynths. Got any mp3s?

Hello,

First of all thanks for the welcome.

As you can see on this picture there
also is a DIY project for a hardware
sequencer. Maybe when my SIDsynth
is ready (ever) that I might want to
build one like that...

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

More like a beastie. Anyway, it caught my eye. It's quite well designed. Looks better than the commercial units from the standpoint of features.

I wish I had a knack for this sort of thing... I'm absolutely useless with making things / tools / etc... Just don't have the right mindset or hands for it.

Funny how we admire skills we don't have. Apparently, Einstein met a man who showed him a telescope he made from scratch. Einstein was incredibly impressed by this man, and told many people how humble he made him feel.

I used to love making things, but after about age 40, my eyes started giving out and I eventually gave it up. I still get the joy of building it myself by wriing code, or patching synths.

I definitely admire people with skills I don't have - very true. I wouldn't change the way things are though - I'm happy with what I am 'good' at, what I've done, and attempted to do.

External MIDIbox Extensions

Not only pots or faders can be connected to the analog and digital inputs of the MIDIbox, but nearly everything which delivers a voltage between 0V and 5V.
