I stumbled across this forum today during my lunch break and I've been enjoying the past posts. I've been wanting a Theremin to play around with for a few years so when I saw the Harrison Instruments Minimum Theremin Kit on the Make blog last week, I ordered one right away. I realize that it's not a "real Theremin," since it doesn't have a volume aerial, but it looks like a fun little kit. Does anyone here have experience with this kit? I'll post my impressions once it arrives.

After reading through some posts, I'm starting to wish I had bought the PAiA kit instead. Maybe I'll order that one next as a more serious theremin.

Yes the web site is quite minimal and the many warnings and legal notices are a little overkill in my opinion. However, I noticed that the kits was designed by Art Harrison whose personal web site is referenced on many other web pages as a good resource for theremin construction.

I'll write up a review once I get the thing built.

BH, I'd rather have some days off than longer lunch breaks; I've got a long list of projects waiting to be built that I haven't had time for so I end up ogling everyone else's projects on the net while at work Sad

Some players look down their noses at the one-stick theremin, but the fact of the matter is that, with the addition of an expression pedal and a cut-off switch it is a different, less common instrument: an aetherphone (or an electronde if the switch is hand-held, or - if you make the pitch antenna two metres tall and shaped like a crucifix - a croix sonore!)

They have a couple of practical advantages over theremins for experimental/electronica - they leave one hand free to do other stuff with - like controlling the synth you are processing the sound with - and they are cheaper, so you can do fun things with two or more of them - like ring-modding two together and playing both at once, one with each hand, for sonic madness with wacky visuals.

From the mp3 sample on Art Harrison's site I get the impression it is possible to wring a melody of sorts out of the instrument, and the tone is OK-ish but not brilliant.
