OMG! Vocoder + Rapid-fire samples = neat spectra |
|
|
I've been working on a technical study of very rapid sample events. Tonight I sat down and thought, what would this sound like through a vocoder?
Actually it was f'in cool. I'm definitely going to use it.
I'm so completely psyched I couldn't even wait until tomorrow to share.
Yes, folks, this is my Friday night. I gave up having a life long ago (don't worry, I'm happily coupled -- I'm really not desperate!)
James
PS Let me also give away my vocoder patch. Just a simple bank of bandpass filters. I need to work on its amplitude scaling... currently it reduces the level of the input signal by a LOT. The number of bands is controlled by the "bands" argument -- this code will produce 10, 20 or 50 bands with no extra effort.
Oh, and I haven't tested a stereo vox signal yet...
Code: | Instr("busfx.vocoder", { |vocbus, vocChannels, bus, inChannels, bands, lowBand, hiBand, rq|
var sig, centerFreqs, splitFilt, amp;
var sig2, inSplit;
// analysis phase
sig = In.ar(vocbus, vocChannels) / rq; // when bandwidth is small, need higher amplitude
centerFreqs = Array.geom(bands, lowBand, (hiBand / lowBand) ** (bands-1).reciprocal);
splitFilt = BPF.ar(sig, centerFreqs, rq);
amp = Amplitude.ar(splitFilt);
// resynthesis phase
sig2 = In.ar(bus, inChannels);
inSplit = sig2.asArray.collect({ |channel| BPF.ar(channel, centerFreqs, rq, amp) });
Mix.ar(inSplit.flop)
}, [\audiobus, \numChannels, \audiobus, \numChannels, StaticSpec(1, 50, \linear, 1, 30), \freq, \freq, #[1, 0.005, \exponential, 0, 1]]); |

Nice toned clicks in that mp3

How many bands did you actually use for the posted track ? And what were your input signals like (apart from one input aparently being "very rapid samples") ? _________________ Jan

The source sound is based on a field recording I took in Washington DC a few months ago. I denoised it in Amadeus, then used an onset detector to identify 327 points of interest. I analyzed them for spectral similarity (more or less) -- that's all preliminary work that I did for an earlier track.
For this sound, I'm taking one row of the analysis matrix, sorting it based on the similarity metric, then overlapping six adjacent points. Every few seconds, I crossfade one of the samples out and replace it with the next one in the row, so the overall spectrum is always changing. There are also periodic accents and other embellishments. That's the sound that gets filtered.
The other vocoder input is a live signal from my voice.
I used 20 bands for that run. It was about 5 percent CPU on my MacBook Pro!

Which clip exactly is gone?
The audio clip is in an attachment to the first message on this thread. The attachment is still available from electro-music.com.
The link to the tutorial on my website is still good.
The code file linked from the tutorial is wrong, but I'm out of town using an unsecured wifi network -- so I don't want to log into my webserver to fix it until I get home (tomorrow late).
