These are pictures of my the Peace Monument in Morokulien. Morokulien is a small place on the border between Sweden and Norway, and is also known as The Republic of Peace. It is also to become my new home which is why I've been paying it frequent visits lately Very Happy

In 1814 Sweden forced Norway into a union under the Bernadotte dynasty, right after Norway declared its independence from the previous union with Denmark and drew up the declaration of independence. The union with Sweden was peacefully dissolved in 1905. The Peace Monument was raised in 1914, a hundred years after the union was created, and is centered exactly on the border between Sweden and Norway.

Morokulien itself came about much later, in 1959, being created as a friendship republic by the radio personalities Lennart Hyland from Sweden and Randi Kolstad from Norway. The name is the concatenation of the Norwegian and Swedish words for "fun", "moro" and "kul", with an ending to round it off nicely.

The Monument as seen from the courtyard, with border marker 67 in front:

The Monument as seen from the railway in the back:

Detail view of the top of the Monument:

The inscription on the front base reads:

NORSKE OG SVENSKE
FREDSVENNER REISTE DETTE
MONUMENT 1914 MED TAK
FOR HUNDREAARIG FRED

English translation:

NORWEGIAN AND SWEDISH
PEACE FRIENDS RAISED THIS
MONUMENT 1914 WITH THANKS
FOR A HUNDRED YEARS OF PEACE

And the inscription on the back base reads:

HÄDANEFTER ÄR KRIG
MELLAN SKANDINAVISKA
BRÖDER OMÖJLIGT

English translation:

HEREAFTER WAR
BETWEEN SCANDINAVIAN
BROTHERS IS IMPOSSIBLE

Below the text is the 'signature' of Oscar I, who was King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 - 1859.

Fascinating! It's a bit embarrassing that I was not aware of the monument or Morokulien.
