Scott Juskiw recently put up his Doomsday Machine project,
http://www.tellun.com/motm/diy/tln712/TLN-712.html
part of which is based on the old Craig Anderton Pulse Width Modulator published in Polyphony.

The PW Modulator is based on a string of XOR gate combining different pulse trains, and gives some pretty radical sounds.

So I thought it woud be interesting to feed two of my 5Pulser waveshapers into an XOR and see what came out. Well, it sure gives you a bunch of wild sounds.

Here's a short demo with four sections. One shaper is given a slow modulation and the other a faster one. The first three sections represent different shape and modulation settings. The fourth one begins with the signal from a sawtooth multiphase animator (similar to the EN design) into which is blended the XOR output. The result is a sort of animation with an attitude.

I think there is some interesting territory combining wave shaping with wave animation. Has anyone else been exploring this?

Ian

Funny thing, I've been thinking along the same lines. I had even picked up some chips to play with, for when I got home and built one of your circuits.

You're just way ahead of me, Ian. Smile

Well it was the discussion of the 5pulser that started it, of course. Your output stage for the 5 pulser outputs being basically an OR gate, made me think of a couple of things. If you could combine pulse lengths via an OR gate, you could get some interesting variable pulse widths.

And I was thinking of what happens when you use some different logic. It's been raining here at the beach so I have had time to sit around and sketch logic tables. Wink

To extend the capability of my box with two 5Pulsers in it, I have added a "switch-hitter" circuit to combine the outputs as a signal going from A-B through A to A+B. This gives an interesting variety of multi-step waveforms.

To further explore the idea of getting sounds with both animation and timbre modulation, I put together some patches using both (1) the 5Pulser with the multistep output and (2) a second sawtooth VCO detuned from the one driving the pulser. The second SAW was run through a phase shifter modulated by an LFO. The pulser timbre was also modulated with LFO's. A third FM'd VCO was added in some of the patches. For the demo, a fair amount of plate reverb was added to keep the sound pretty smooth. Here's a short clip of some of the sounds I got:

Yep. I got 2 of them, but haven't built them yet. I built the Digisound version of the sawtooth wave animator long ago, and found that you really need to be able to tweak the LFOs, which can be done with Scotts version.

Very interesting territory! I'm still looking for the perfect alien hurdy-gurdy drone. Or a choir of dijeridoos.

I just finished your 5pulser, and have been playing with it a little bit. First thing I did was feed it from Ken Stone's wave multiplier.

Now you got me thinking of feeding the 5pulser into my sub-oscillator/divider. . . .

Hey, glad you got it working! But feeding it with a wave tripler? Shocked That's got to be a lot of pulses. Cool

Please keep us posted as you experiments progress.
