Just downloaded the new book. It looks great! Already have 3 XR VCOs done, if the rest is anything similar, its gonna be a monster. I want to start laying out boards for each modules this weekend, and have encountered something on the schematics that I am not familiar with. Anywhere the CD4016 shows up the connections look strange (to me). Each junction looks like a momentary switch. Could someone explain how the actual connection would look?

Maybe you're getting muddled between the CD40106 (hex schmitt inverter) and CD4016 (quad SPST switch)?

-- that's pretty much what they are!
You have four in the package. Each gate has two in/outs (they're bi-directional) and a control input. If the control is low (0) then the switch is open and it closes when the control is high (1).

Useful chips!

Yes, the 4016 is a package of four switches. You'll note on the schematics, however, that I do show the appropriate pin numbers. Use these to guide you in laying out the PCB.

And here's an interesting bit of trivia: did you know the 4016 package can be configured as an XOR gate? I came up with that this summer for another project that didn't pan out.

Big thanks to Tom and Thomas. I had a feeling that it was some type of IF/THEN situation. I think this LFO is moving to the top of my list.
