Hey Bill,
isn't the NE570 a compander?
The 3080 and the LM13700 are TOAs. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Yes, but he is not using it like a compression/expansion unit but in more of a straight VCA role. The basis of companding is the use of voltage controlled amplifiers and the close monitoring of signal levels. There are two independent sections in the NE570. With some modification of the original Clangora circuit, I would imagine that the LM13700 could be made to do the same thing as the NE570 since the OTA is the basis of most VCA's. The LM13700 is more widely available and cheaper and it has a better S/N ratio than a CA3080. Also, the Iabc control current is better isolated on the LM13700 part than on a CA3080 as I have mentioned before in other topics on the forum.
I have not looked back on the article lately in it's entirety but I believe Tom's reasoning was that two VCA sections could be made from one NE570 and that the distortion and noise specification is better using this part. So, you can make two VCA sections with one LM13700 also if you could not get a NE570.

Thanks for explaining that Bill.
I can see I still have much to learn.
I've learned so much hanging out here, I forget sometimes that my theoretical background is a bit shaky! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

does anyone have a clean looking, 1:1 copy of the PCB art? I've got the one from here, but its not sized so well. I'm in the process right now of re-doing one, but if one already exists why not just use that...

hey Justin
Reduce it to 64% on a photocopier and you'll be all set. I had to figure this out by trial and error. I'm weird the guy at the copier holding a 16 pin IC socket to each copy and muttering to himself.

*very nice job*. Those little socketed modules are very cool. I've seen those before in various prototyped things at work but never worked that way myself.
I'm psyched to get this done. I etched the panel earlier today on my lunch break. I've got the PCB mostly populated so I'll post a photo this weekend.

Yes, I am really interested to see the result
Thanks for sharing the project.

No sound samples from mine though. I already sold it on (including, sadly, three of my four LM566's...) _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

nice job, Etaoin.
I'm surprised you sold it. Were you disappointed with it?
Mine won't be finished as soon as I had predicted. I somehow forgot to order one of the parts. Somehow I always forget something . Must be pathological... |

If I always ordered all of the parts I probably would have been out of DIY years ago. Its that project lapse and stock of parts that keeps me building! Also thanks for the scaling advice. I tried that originally with not much success but will give it another go before re-laying out another board.

Something is either back-ordered, I forgot to order it, they neglected to send it, its the wrong part, or the capacitors are HUGE!
If you continue to have trouble, I have the pcb image at the right size. I may even have it on press n peel. Let me check tomorrow and if I have it I could mail them to you. I'll let you know.

Perhaps a little OT, but save a spot next to your Clangora. Thomas wasn't the least bit unoccupied this summer...... _________________ My Site |

Thanks everyone.
The panel is etched and I'll be drilling holes and trimming it to size tomorrow. I'll try to put a photo up of the actual panel soon.

Enough of the winks. Let's start a new thread and uncork this puppy for the EM crowd.
To get the ball rolling, its name is: the Mega Percussive Synthesizer.
Modesty prevents me from mentioning it is the most versatile percussion synth ever conceived. Oops, I just did. We better let Scott take this over on another thread.
And now back to your regularly scheduled Clangora...
Thomas Henry
P.S.: no hard-to-find parts! |
