As a service tech I used to build small Theremins for fun, and I am hoping to get a Moog soon. I heard a documentary on the ABC about 2 years ago, and I have forgotten the players mentioned, but some of the pieces were amazing, particularly when the Theremin was played with stringed instruments and sat back in the mix a little instead of being "on top" as many featured Theremin recordings seem to be.

Who are the top players now, and where can their playing be heard? The documentary mentioned that some of the best are session players are in Hollywood.

Hi, subject to your taste in genre, here's a few players worth looking into, in my opinion.

Pamelia Kurstin. Barbara Buchholz. Lydia Kavina. Carolina Eyck. Peter Pringle. Alexander Thomas. Randy George.

Where can you find them?

A fair few are linked from my myspace profile.

Google will reveal the rest.

A good place to hear theremin music is the radio program and podcast "Spellbound: A Brief Program Of Music For Theremin."

http://spellbound.purplenote.com/

Keep an eye out for the 6/1/08 episode podcast (not there at the time of writing) - it's the Best Of 2007, including Best Of Category winners Kevin Kissinger and Kip Rosser, who are not strangers to these forums.

Well done guys! Well deserved. Smile

You would likely enjoy:

The texture is as you describe -- strings wherein the theremin is part of the texture.

Thank you, Mark.

Kip has played the theremin for many more years than I have. His music was and still is an inspiration to me and he personally has offered much encouragement and moral support for my own efforts.

You can hear Kip's theremin work at http://performancekr.com.

Thank you for that link, I enjoyed the piece you mentioned, and am amazed that the orchestration was done on a K2600!
