6 months of work....(with song) |
|
|
show and tell time. i have now filled up my first rack (and then some)
here are a few pictures.
please, dont mind the mess. or the knobs...need better knobs.
design is not my strong point. some of the modules used reject blacet panels which had too many or too few holes (in the wrong places as well) so there are often holes which just have to remain. is there a way to plug up holes?
also, the power one psu is in that big wooden box as i still cant figure out a good place to mount it(it doesnt fit in the rack)
many of these panels are plexiglass (as i didnt have any more panels) and the labeling (if you can call it that) is just white paint marker.
anyway.

Wow! I can almost guarantee that you have built more in six month than 99% of the diy community has ever done in that amount of time. And starting from absolute zero, to boot.

As one of the most prolific posters, its nice to see what you've been up to.
Hey how are the shipping prices with online metals?? I need to switch over to them, as the prices at my machine shop are now nuts. |

blue hell: nah, i just keep the laptop right next to my workbench. I suppose since I have learned mostly From this forum, the forum is just part of my regular working routine. The nice thing is I can also post/read from my job and from bed at night when my wife is tired of me working away in the room.
by the way, i want to post a new song made with the modular, but the forum is telling me i have reached my upload quota
is there way to upload more? or should i just put it in a super low quality format? (it was in 128) _________________ -------------------------------------------- check out various dan music at: http://www.myspace.com/lossnyc

PS, Loss, your music on Myspace is awesome!
You've got excellent taste in music too imo (without sounding like an old internet geek fart who's being too patronising ) _________________ ACHTUNG!

a bunch of my friends and I had plone on the stereo quite a bit for a while back when i was still in chicago. i always thought they had a good sense of humor to them as well as great choice of sounds and obviously good songs.
you know in america its always seemed so hard to find a label that will put out anything with that much personality. everyone seems to only want 4 to the floor dance music, and then only if it fits into a tight mold.
its been very hard for me to come to terms with just eventually saying never mind, and writing for myself only and never for any hopes of releasing a record.
i am sure many of us are in this position.
anyway, thanks all for the comments. _________________ -------------------------------------------- check out various dan music at: http://www.myspace.com/lossnyc

Really? I always heard this and that about someone completing a module in a couple of hours. I was thinking I'm a huge slowpoke for taking about 8. _________________ " I went through quite a few trannies til I found one I liked" - Wild Zebra |

you have a job, wife, post constantly, time to build a modular from scratch, time to experiment with more AND write music? are you on something?
i have to say that the track you posted above is far cooler then the myspace stuff.
not sure what they mean by "hippie" either, hippie to me is jefferson airplane, late beatles, hendrix, etc.. (great stuff) then there is the neo-hippie glowstick generic elevator techno / acid shit which should all just be destroyed.

para: no, i just dont sleep much. (and i have a child who keeps me up)
i work freelance too (i am an audio producer/teacher/consultant/mixer/tech) and i make my own hours.so i have alot of time when i want it.
(if there is any problem with NYC its that its too hard to meet people. so my life really is MAINLY making music, building synths and my family. that must be why i have time and energy. because i have no social life)
i guess i just hate not getting anything done. AND LOOK AT YOU-you have a webpage, blog, company, post schematics, AND sell the parasites...
para, what are you into music wise? if you preferred the song i posted to the stuff on both of my myspace pages (both of them or just the techno one? the lossnyc page is my rock stuff and not electronic at all) the reason i ask is that i have tons of different albums i have made in different genres and maybe i should put up a page of stuff like that.
my myspace pages are an attempt to group my stuff into a few genres which people might enjoy but i am always interested in what kind of stuff people might actually listen too. you know, before i got into electronics i was recording a song a day, that has been cut down alot now that i am soldering with my time, but i still am always looking for ways to get people listening to my stuff.....so to make a long story short, let me know what it is you liked about that track and i might just have more stuff like that around. _________________ -------------------------------------------- check out various dan music at: http://www.myspace.com/lossnyc

"if there is any problem with NYC its that its too hard to meet people"
i would have thought the opposite to be true, strange. i've been there and no its not like you can just start talking to people on the streets and shit but clubs, studios and playing shows should get things going?
"i guess i just hate not getting anything done." yeah i haven't been bored since high school. i actually have to fight really hard to even feel like i can come close to not having something on my perpetual list to get done.
and i have a few very small business' and sell a bunch of shit other then the parasites, which i think i'm killing soon anyway, boring. but i'm single and this is my job so i have a all the time in the world.
you have a kid too... crazy.
"both of my myspace pages" i just saw one? oh i see the loss one now. listening. its pretty good. i feel like critiquing your mixes but not sure how receptive you are? i can tell you that your monitoring setup is off for sure though. it’s a shame most people don’t understand that and how it’s thee most important thing when mixing ( there are cheap, though discouraged, ways to resolve it too ). i come from an engineering background so its engrained
the writing and singing are pretty good though. i think if you could change up your mixing style you could have a pretty good output. ever hear calla’s - televise?
what i liked about the one posted is that its not dry, drab, rigid, boring, sterile, repetitive, etc... it might not have been the most exploratory stuff but in comparison to the snazelle stuff, well i could happily listen to the whole thing, the other i couldn't even finish. but my taste is not going to be the same as others, listening to the radio or tv crap makes me want to strangle people
there is some shit listed here http://www.myspace.com/suchaturnon but its far from a complete list and i'm constantly looking for new stuff.
fuck .... epic reply

para-i am an an audio engineer for a living. these mixes, while you might not like them, are not due to poor monitoring situations they are more just due to being rush jobs. i actually consult and install/teach studios for a living so i have access to great mixing rooms on a daily basis. i personally dont have a huge problem with the mixes though as they are being offered for free and if there was a chance of releasing stuff for real i might take another look at them but i i am nowhere near as careful or critical of my own mixes as the ones that people are hiring me to do, nor am i as worried about it (since nobody hears them anyway
the problem with many mixing setups is often that people dont compare their mixes on many different systems. you CAN get great results mixing in a jail cell if you are aware of the limitations of the room and know how to offset for any inherent features of the space. that said, most of the mixes i put up are first draft rough mixes, because i output so much material and to such a small audience, that i dont take days perfecting the sound like i might do on a commercially viable project. check out the songs on the soundclick page or on my indie911 page for some more developed mixes...the new myspace loss tracks are really rough but i wanted to put up some new stuff
