nl2 managing polyphony tips? proper multipart mode? |
|
|
I am finding that the 16 notes of polyphony gets eaten up way to quickly and it is hard to monitor/manage.
For example, I was sequencing a part that had progression of three note chords. Because the chords had long sustain and unison it meant that I was constantly using about 6-12 voices! So when I tried to sequence another mono riff as a different part (e.g part A receives on ch.1 and the out output A, part B receives on midi channel 2 then audio out outputB) I found that it was dropping notes like crazy. This seems totally unreasonable for a supposed multitimbral synth to barely be able to play a simple chord progression and a mono riff.
So am I using the NL2 as a multimbral synth in the wrong way? Does it matter what pacthes are loaded in parts C and D even if I am not triggering them?
Is there a way to monitor how many voices are being used by which part dynamically? Maybe a better strategy for getting more poyphony? |

The NL2 has a 16 Voice polyphony when NOT using Unison. To play three notes chords and overlapping sustain means at least 6 Voices and 12 Voices Unison. If the third chord is also overlapping you'll need 18 Voices Unison, so two to much...
Then there is something like low note priority. In this situation I have to know which part is losing it notes: the chords or the lead...
Only the active Slots get the Voices, so it doesn't matter what you have loaded into the other Slots. Anyway, all Programs use the same amount of DSP power, even when all is set to zero.
It's not a solution, but it is wise to be aware the NL is a concept over 15 years old... In fact, it was one of the first commercial VA.

hey man,
I just did a test using my sequencer and it looks like I am only getting 8 notes polyphony (without unison on). Is it possible that I have a bad dsp? this could relate to the other problem with the factory demo playing and explains why I have been getting disappointing polyphony.
What I did for test was make a patch with no sustain and looped a 1/4 bar with a 1/16 note starting the bar. (repeated beep). I then started adding one note at a time on top (going up) and once I reached 8 it would not let me add any more. There were no note overlaps (clear rest after each note sounded).
Any clues as to what might be wrong?
thanks!
