Hey Loss,

That is the next book up from Magic Smoke. We've been a bit busy with the 566 book, 566 PCB, AS21C, tempcos and buying several hundred 2164 chips, but the 3080 book is coming! It'll be available in printed and PDF form (like AS21C and the 566 book). It's also possible that someone out there might want to sell you their original, but please remember that selling/trading photocopies is a violation of Thomas' copyright.

Hi Everyone!

I've just finished recreating Thomas' "Making Music With The 3080 OTA" and I need a couple of proofreaders. What I'm looking for is:

1) you need to look over the whole thing (~25 pages) and check for speeling errors, and make sure all the references to the various sections, schematics, and charts are correct.

2) if you caught "speeling" in the paragraph above, you're on the ball.

3) if you happen to already own a hard copy of "3080," that's even better, but it's not a requirement.

4) you need to get back to me with any errors within 48 hours.

Like I say, I only need a COUPLE of proofreaders, and it'll be on a first-come first-served basis. Of course, you'll get a free copy of the printed spiral-bound book for your efforts.

Also, would there be any interest in a companion PCB? The book shows schematics for different current sources, along with a VCA, a Balanced Modulator, and a VCO, (I've got to admit, the book is a great primer on OTA and the various current sources - if you know a little bit about electronics, this is a great education on these circuits) and I'm thinking the most popular would be the VCO (basically the same core as Thomas' VCO-1). Then again, the Bal Mod is pretty cool. Whaddaya all think?

Thanks again!

Thanks Sound!

I'm pushing the proofreading because I want to make this book available in the next few days. It will be $12, and available through our normal print to order service at Lulu.com. I'll announce again as soon as we're ready to go.

Sounds great, everyone!

Okay, so I've got Loss, Danno, and State Machine. We're all set, and as soon as we check this and make any necessary corrections, I'll make an announcement here. Thanks again to everyone!

3080's are easy to find and the book gives good knowledge into ota's in general which could be applied to 13700's

3080s aren't cheap. If you know of a cheap source do share! 13700s are $0.50 for a dual OTA. If you know how to get a 3080 that cheap let us know. That said, there are extras in the 13700 which would not be covered in this book. I'd like a good read on using the linearizing diodes. PAIA use of them negates the need for a tempco in their VCO.

I usually see CA3080 chips for $2.50 to $3.00. I usually see LM13700's for going for about $1.50. Can you tell us where the $0.50 13700 parts are? That would be a bargain in low quantities. Wink

Although the NJM 13700s are pretty cheap ($0.61), Futurlec still shows both the 3080 and the 3280 in stock for $1.90 each. Not too terrible. They have good prices on 1% resistors too.

Hi Crash,

Not yet! I've just gotten all the reports from my intrepid team of proofreaders, and I'm doing the final update. I'll post here when it's ready for prime time, which should be tomorrow (the 3rd) sometime. Almost there!
