I want to build the UD-1 Drum Voice, which requires Gate and CV input signals. I understand this CV/Gate method was one of the early precursors to MIDI. I do not own any gear that transmits CV/Gate; would I need to buy a device that does? Or can I hook up a MIDI keyboard to a MIDI-to-CV converter to transmit the signals? Or is there a simpler way to generate CV/gate signals that doesn't involve buying keyboards or converter boxes?

welcome joshcovert!

A MIDI->CV would certainly do it. Generally, the UD-1 likes trigger signals (triggers are much narrower than gates and are of a fixed time, where a gate will last as long as a note is pressed, for instance). However, it can be pretty easy to derive trigger signals from gate signals, and the UD would probably work not bad with gates.

A vintage drum machine with trigger out would work well for triggers (but for not CVs).

Maybe others here might have more of a clue than me. Very Happy

Take care,
Scott

Not to point out the obvious, but a very simple way to go is to use a pot wired to a power supply for your CV and a SPST switch for your gate. The trigger can be derived from the gate with an RC combination. As a matter of practice, I included a manual switch on every drum voice I've created and lots of times end up "playing" them that way! Of course the pot wired to a power supply basically only provides a 2nd tuning function. The CV in can be any voltage source such as an ADSR or LFO.

Also, you can visit one of many electronic drum DIY web sites that show you how to make your own analog trigger pads. Here is one for example.
