I thought this was an excellent three days of music and information.
The gallery was a great source for learning about everything from biofeedback, alternate tunings and control devices, and the music was outstanding! I was really wowed the most by Kevin Kissinger with his original compositions and performance on the the theremin.
Other standout performances, and I didn't catch them all, were Lunar Moon Control,Illusion of Safety,Per Wikstrom and Micheal Pecks' laptop glitch set at the end of the show.
Many thanks to Howard and company for putting on such a great festival!
Just my two cents, after my first and only experience at this event.

Thank you for the compliment -- I'm pleased that you enjoyed my music. This is my second year to perform at electro-music. The outpouring of support means a lot to me!
To see the analog patch cord synths really makes me want to revisit my Aries synth. I enjoyed messing with the vintage Korg synth and the instruments next to it (the ones in the wooden cases with all the unlabeled pots and pin connectors!) I was so short on spare time -- I could have fiddled with those instruments for hours.
Performance is a like a crucible and to perform electronic music is a test of person and machine. I discovered, much to my terror, that I didn't pack my theremin well enough and on Friday night discovered that I had broken the volume sensitivity pot! With no way to get a replacement at such short notice, I had to adapt my playing technique to a volume circuit that certainly didn't respond the same. (If I seemed a little distant and intense on Saturday, please accept my apologies and this explanation!)
In my sound check, I discovered that from the stage I could not hear the rear speakers at all! So, rather than hearing cues, I had to count off measures in my head! Aargh!
So, this week, I am making a new cover to protect the controls on my theremin (I ordered the $2 part from Moog Music and should have it soon). And, I went out and got one of those sale-priced SRM350s from Musician's friend to use as a stage monitor.
In other words, I learned a lot from the performing experience.
My focus on theremin playing has kept me away from my keyboard/synth work and I miss it. My plan is to incorporate some live synth work into my live-looping work in the future.
Anyway, enough rambling for now.
I enjoyed the festival immensely and thank everyone for making it a great success! _________________ -- Kevin

Kevin,
Dude! You were amazing! I could tell you were having some technical issues,I've been there myself! I once had a contact stick on an Oberhiem OBXa keyboard in the middle of a show and took it apart, fixed it and put it back together right there on the stage before the next song started.
I really liked your first song, really reminded me of Walter Carlos, but I actually liked it better, and that last thing with all that stuff looping in surround, sounded like Philip Glass on steroids, that just blew me away, more of the performances should have taken advantage of the surround set up.
I hope next year is not to much farther than Kingsport, as I really would like to attend in 2009.
Do you have any available recordings?
Best!

Yes, I agree on two fronts the festival was awesome and so was your performance Kevin. I've still got the live looping theremin stuck in my head...we all admire the focus and coordination that went into that it was really something.
Eartoyz, if you could get your hands on an E.M. 07 DVD, Kevin's performance was also excellent last year. I must admit, it was one of two performances there that brought me to tears. |
