Hello guys,

Well, the Wretch showed up yesterday and I've been playing with it since and making all kinds of wonder-sounds. Love it.

I've read the owner's manual several times and I'm well aware that the input to the Waveshaper's Pulser is VERY insensitive. I would like to confirm as to whether it actually does anything at all on mine. The LFOs don't seem to effect it and +/- 10V CVs from my Blacet Binary Zone also have no effect. I've even tried clicking it with a +9VDC battery.

Thus far, absolutely 'zero' effect even when sweeping the "Pulser Tune".

The aforementioned CVs definitely had an effect upon the Filter Sweep.

Would one of you be so kind as to throw up a patch sheet, as seen here: http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-21675.html , that would let me set up something that is pretty much guaranteed to work? I know that there are variances due to tubes, but I just want to eliminate the chance of 'New User Error' from the equation.

Thanks so much,

Kent

About 6 posts down in the examples of Wretch patches, the last patch I posted uses the pulser. Do not drive the pulser with large voltages. It works (only works, I might add) with low level signals.

Thank you again for your help, EdisonRex! It is so nice to be able to draw upon the experience of others. The trick was to not slam the Waveshaper with the super-hot output levels of the VCO.

Issue sorted!

Onward to more noise buffoonery!

A pleasure to help.

I can add that the temptation with the Wretch Machine is to slam all the stops to 11 and grind a sound out of it. The lesson of the Pulser is that ALL of the subtlety of this instrument comes from backing off on the controls. Granted, there's a place for everything and making it wail like a tortured demon soul can be satisfying in itself (because it does it so well). But there is so much to explore, more so if you start by turning down the VCOs.

Before I had purchased the Wretch, I had always thought that warm and softer sounds were possible with it. I have the Analogue Solutions Vostok as well and I consider it to be the Solid-State cousin of the Wretch in many ways.

The Vostok easily pounds out aggressive sounds, but the cooler hand can coax some very lovely things out of it. This philosophy quite obviously transfers over to the Wretch as well.

The Master Volume knob on the Wretch is obviously meant to be an integral part of the unit.

Sounds like you got it. Post some soundfiles when you get a chance!

Here is something that I bashed together and recorded within 40 minutes of getting it out of the box.

http://www.upload.muffwiggler.com/kent/WretchSineWaves.wav

And here is using the filter as an oscillator: http://www.upload.muffwiggler.com/kent/Wretch2.wav

Today, I connected it to the French Connection for the 1st time. I can get 4 octaves out of the Wretch if I tune one osc. to MED and the other to HIGH. There is some pitch slop, what with the 2 oscillators not quite playing nicely (even though I tuned the hell out of them) and the fact that the French Connection is not Hz/Oct. Thankfully, the slider aspect of it lets one 'fudge' the pitch.
