NOVA
PRESENTS
Musical Minds
Tuesday, June 30 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS
Can the power of music make the brain come alive? Throughout his
career Dr. Oliver Sacks, neurologist and acclaimed author, whose
book Awakenings was made into a Oscar-nominated feature film
starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, has encountered myriad
patients who are struggling to cope with debilitating medical
conditions. While their ailments vary, many have one thing in
common: an appreciation for the therapeutic effects of music. NOVA
follows four individuals--two of whom are Sacks's case studies in
his latest book, the national best-seller Musicophilia: Tales of
Music and the Brain--and even peers into Sacks's own brain, to
investigate music's strange, surprising, and still unexplained power
over the brain.

Just caught it because Jon Stewart was interviewing Sacks in his evening rerun the same time as the Nova program, so I only missed the first 15 or so minutes. Well worth the watch for four far out brain-music case studies!

Yeah, this was pretty cool. I missed only the first 10 minutes or so.

I loved it when they had Oliver Sacks in the MRI listening to the Crucifixus from the B Minor Mass (one of my favorites too). They were talking about the intensity of the emotional experience. Meanwhile, I'm at the dinner table hearing it come out of the tinny TV speakers and within just a few beats, I'm fighting not to double over 'cause it's so crazy beautiful -- the sadness of the plodding passacaglia, the startling chromatic inflections -- gooseflesh in seconds.

That shit's real. Sacks was turning the dial up slowly to measure his emotional involvement, but Bach punched me in the gut over 250 years later.

I think it's because the public by and large enjoys the antics of assholes.

This subject is very interesting to me, being a person who has gained so much from music therapy. Through music and community I have gone from a train wreck to a fairly stable and happy person in two years. This experience makes me another example of the healing power of music with respect to mental illness.

Jon Stewart is not a real anchorman. His "Daily Show" is a fake news show. In the US it runs on the Comedy Central channel, which is a strong hint about the purpose of the show.

I doubt it is possible to be a nice person and be a successful comedian in America at the same time. Even the guys in Blue Collar Crew had to make fun of somebody (thus, be assholes) to be comedians.

humor in your native language has deeper cultural roots but if your command of another language is good enough "alien humor" can be very enjoyable too.
for me the Marx brothers are too hard to understand. Monty Python is easier but I don't understand everything, John Belushi is/was easy Sad
His Saturday Night Live skit "Samurai Optometrist" with Buck Henry was a blast Very Happy

I have noticed that the easiest and most widespread comedic technique is victimization. The comedian selects someone known to the public and proceeds to verbally abuse this person to the delight of the audience. This is why I don't bother with comedians.

That said, there is some zany humor and some non-abusive humor, so I don't want to knock comedy all together. In fact, with political correctness comedians have lost many of their abusive stereotypes but they have reverted to more acceptable forms of abuse such as degrading overweight people as Seinfeld did in his farewell episode. It's the last open prejudice and I'm sick of it.

I've received tons of abuse in my life because comedians like that asshole mentioned above teach children that it's OK and even rewarded to abuse others for the sake of comedy. They even teach them HOW to do the abuse, by example.

Come on, brainwaves are boring. Miracle cat scans, frequency, some thing noone understands. Molecular... nervous tissue. Classical... malevolent white noise. Dork controlling computer with brain.

Just kidding, Jason. Might I reccomend some Magic Dimension?

http://www.magic-dimension.de

Magic Dimension has alot of music on http://www.soundclick.com/magicdimension. I reccommend listening to "Valley of Green Smaragds" and go from there if you like it- triumphant music if you ask me.

Carlo,

I just watched the interview of Oliver Sacks on The Daily Show on American TV. Suffice it to say I had a very, very different reaction to this interview. Cultural differences, I guess.

I still want to visit Italy though!!!

Yes, I understood that. But I don't think Jon Stewart treated him that badly. In fact, he took it really easy on Sacks. Sacks got Stewart good a couple of times, in fact.
