I don't want to spend $300 on a retrofit and would rather make one myself.

I found a decent looking guide on this site: http://www.angelfire.com/geek/srlabs/p6retro.html

It requires that I load an IC, and I have no idea how to do that. Can someone guide me through the process?

to burn a pic, first you need a picburner, usually a kit cost $30-$50, which may even contain a free pic, though maybe not the one you need for this project....so buy a pic around $10
now build your pic kit and try to get your pooter to converse with it....
then build your midi circuit on veroboard and install - voila Wink

none of this is impossible, but it is a bit of a steep learning curve, especially if you have not done this stuff before.

why not just pay $75 for this one?

I just bought a polysix and was wondering about MIDI. Didn't recall that Spider had devised such a thing. The $75 one is "installed", maybe you can buy it and install yourself for cheaper, rather than shipping your synth around.

Years ago I bought a Willem programmer which works for 16F84 microcontrollers - and dozens of other things. Actually, making programmers for PIC and AVR microcontrollers is usually quite easy. Little more than an RS232 connection, a voltage supply, and socket. With patience it can be done on the cheap.
