Technical problems - Status Report |
|
|
As many of you know, we have lately had some bad problems with the server not responding, or if it did respond it would be very slow. Yesterday I spent many hours trying to sort this out and really came up with nothing I could adjust to solve the problem. I have known for a long time that we were short on physical memory, but why would all of a sudden this problem become a show stopper?
Having run out of tricks and out of desperation, I had our hosting company upgrade our server with more RAM. It seems to have made a significant improvement; at least so far.
I've turned on the site again and we'll have to see if this takes care of the problems.
Thanks for your patience. _________________ --Howard

Thanks for the feedback, Andy. We have been down a while so the search bots haven't been scanning us, yet. _________________ --Howard

Thanks for bringing it up again fairly quickly. I know how messy these things can get.

Thanks, Fonik for the the donation. Much appreciated.
I've been watching the process table carefully today. This upgrade maxes out the server we are running. I'm going to start planning an upgrade to a bigger and better one. The key is to keep the database in memory and still have room to keep the httpd servers in memory too. Even with the upgrade, we are right on the edge now. _________________ --Howard

Seems to have been a bit of a rough ride for the forum this weekend, glad it got fixed - things seem snappy now. _________________ Jan

Thanks Howard, things are fast here today ... Pages come up fast. The real acid test will be on another busy weekend but adding or upgrading the memory on any computer always helps performance. I did notice this weekend was particularly bad ... thanks for all the work ....

Thanks for all the hard work Howard.
Is there any way the database could be shrunk?
I really don't know much about this, just thinking out loud. Enlighten me. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

The best way to shrink the data base is to remove old posts. I don't want to do that because there is a lot of great information in some of the early topics.
Right now our data base is a little over 1/2 GB. (Attachements are not kept in the data bases). This machine now has 2 GB. It is best to allow the data base manager to keep the database in memory. Fortunately these machines can take up to 4 GB, but the proper solution when you get a large data base is to use two machines, one for the data base and one for everything else. Of course you eventually have to end up with more and more machines.
The only downside is expense, as you might expect. _________________ --Howard

I followed Fonik's cue and made a little donation too - silly I haven't done so earlier when I think about how invaluable this place is.
0.5 GB is a lot of text!
