Hallo everyone,

i hope that I'm posting this in the right category.

I'm going to build a ring modulator from craig anderton book, Electronic Projects for Musicians. I ran into problems looking for the right capacitor values. They are labeled, 0.05uF and 50uF. I never seen this values before. I've only be seaching in germany. the circuit is running at 9v.

Can anyone advice where i can find these?

best

Capacitors come in one of these standard values.

So you can use 0.047uF and 47uF. I most applications the closest standard value is chosen, unless there's some special requirements, in which case the desired value can be composed of capacitors in series and/or parallel or an adjustable capacitor can be used (the latter is rare except in RF).

No .. that would yield something a bit less than 3 uF, they'd have to go in parallel in order to add the the values.

But when 50 uF is specified you can just use 47 uF as a substitute - 47 and 50 can be considered to be equal for capacitor values usually.

A good way to think about these kinds of substitutions is by looking at the tolerances of the required components. The difference between 47 and 50 is < 5%, which is really good. Same goes for trimmers and pots.

thanks for the tip. you're right with capacitors in parallel. i forgot that it's the opposite calculations for capacitors.

thanks then i can proceed with my noise making box.
