Subject description: Stutter and Glitch percussion programming
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi,

Im into experimental electronica and light breaks....

THe kind of artists that inspire me are Violet Vision,PAul Ressel,Habersham,Jviewz,Shpongle and aphex twin.

I really just dont know where to start in understanding and reproducing the percussion.

I understand the basic stutter glitch theory over a mix but to also get this effect in the percussion and the programming....i just cant pick it up from listening.

Anyone know where to find a tutorial or some insight...

thanks

Funnily enough, I was looking at this myself earlier, I just dragged this up from my history when I saw this.

Maybe this has something in it? It's a long article, have a look through.

You should understand standard rhythms and percussions first, so you can then bend or brake the rules. Most people started like that, and went all the way. So if you are capable of doing a straight rock beat, then you should start experimenting from there. Don't get ahead of your self and you will get it done.

Some of it is just zooming in on waveforms and editing small chunks, duplicating waveforms, while modifying them. Creative results can come from that, because you will inevitably find your own way of doing things.

To see some of the options though, look at automated glitch programs and study what they do. Two that come to mind: "dblue Glitch" and "LiveCut" by MDSP. Both are free vsts for win.

A look at Euclidean rhythms will certainly help, have a play with the sequencer and have a read, lots of interesting material there. This leads to polyrhythms, naturally, and these are key to complexity with non-linear repetition that you need.

In short, take a number of 16ths (like 7 or 9) and then create a midi loop this length. Then take a number to divide in, ie, the number of perc hits, say 3. Drop these in at the start of the loop then move the remaining spaces back evenly as you can, and you have a polyrhythm! Then use multiples of the loop length, change the start point, number of hits, and you have some complex perc patterns that can also be used for triggering .rex files of drumbreaks, etc.

[edit for addendum]

Some Euclidean stuff for the Clavia Nord Modular G2 demo software (which is a free download) can be found here.

Here's a couple of links, one cross-platform and another Ableton-specific... http://www.hisschemoller.com/2011/euclidean-rhythms/
