Stick with me, this might be a little long...

I've been lurking around the intertubes for awhile, trying to get my bearings. The production of various types of electric music (if I had my choice, goa and similar genres) has always been an eventual goal of mine. About six months ago I decided to stop sitting around and actually pursue said goal, and have been slowly figuring out things on my own.

But after trying out my first mod synth (Nord Modular G2) I realized that I do not know anything I should. After following the beginning tutorial for the G2, my head was spinning and I was digging through SynthesisWorkshops trying to make heads or tails of it all with little luck.

I mean, when it comes down to it, I really just want to start from square one and get rid of any misinformation/misconceptions I have.

What kind of path would I take to eventually be able to make music in this way, and actually understand why it worked out the way it did? Where would I start it?

I feel like everything I need to know is out there, but I just lack direction on where to find it :/

=Any= advice you guys could give me on this would mean a lot to me.

welcome

Pick a song you like and try to imitate it - patching the sounds you hear and copying the arrangement. Then, if you arrive at something that doesn't sound like the original at all, take a step back and figure out if you actually like what you've made anyway. Are some of the things nice at least? Reshape, fiddle around, make new imitations...

I don't think there's any way to make music other than bringing in some kind of idea (however small) of your own and building on that. So what's your goal (3-minute pop songs, hours of live improv, DJing, ambient installations on toilets etc). Maybe there is some kind of step by step thing out there... there's a lot of Nord Modular info around (Rob Hordijk's workshops come to mind - edit: but you've already found those).

If you have specific issues or questions on the G2, there's a big friendly G2 forum here where you can ask stuff and post patches you're wondering about.

/Stefan
