What do you use for drums?

Hello all,

So the point of this thread is to share what you use for drums in your music - it could be the software or a hardware synthesizer you prefer, a collection of sound samples, a physical kit, or the pens and coffee mug that's on the desk in front of you. I know that some here even build their own analog synth circuits for drum synthesis.

I've mostly made mine from the various oscillators in the Nord G2, or used 'found sounds' that I field recorded and used with samplers I built in Reaktor. I've been thinking more about investing in Kontakt or just getting a jazz kit into a room and with a bunch of mic's and recording it, but I got curious as to what other people are using.

If you'd care to share, please do, and I really don't care if its electronic or not - just as long as its percussive.

I use the G2 as well.
It's sequencer modules are quite nice and the drum sounds I take out of it are amazing (I did a similar performance to Autechre on my G2X - the funny thing is that I have never heard Autechre at the time).

I have a Yamaha RY30 too, but the Nord as a more intuitive sequencer and since I got it after my Nord, haven't used it that much.

However, I fell that I need a better sequencer and I hope I can get a Spectralis for Christmas, which is likely going to be my main drum box

Electribe ESX-1 and Ableton Live, plus I have a shelf full of stuff like cartons, pieces of wood, hard plastic packages etc that I like to bang together in front of mic, record in the one of the aforementioned and then use as percussion sounds. I've also started using my modulars as an alternative sound source that I record and use like that.

Nothing is settled on yet, with my groupings of modular stuff. In videos over the past year plus though:

- my Liquid Hihat design (for hihat and snare type sounds)
- Thomas Henry's MPS (I have another yet, to build)

I'll be building more drum sound modules from scratch in coming time for my 'KAOS Drum Machine' drum sounds controller, that I started designing, yesterday.

Wow, Uncle Krunkus, I thought I was the only person still using an SR-16. I use the SR-16 for jamming and rough mixes, I like the trick with the "fill" footswitch. I use my S90 for recorded drums. I'm hoping to pick up an Akai MPC1000 in the new year.

I don't "play" the SR-16, I just use it as a voice module running off Cakewalk. I like the "group" function for isolating open-closed hats etc. You can also create hundreds of other cool sounds by "grouping" two different snares etc. then sending really close note on's from the computer. Try it out. Wink

I use a Jomox 999 and Grove Agent that came with Cubase. I also have Sonik Synth 2 which has some more drums....

I started out with an SR-16 many moons ago... a fun device. Smile

I thought I'd add, I recently picked up BFD2 - pretty nice stuff, although this is my first emulator of acoustic drums, so I don't have anything to gauge it on. The G2 still wins for designing electronic percussive sounds, but I'm still exploring possibilities.

Drums : the brain of my midi & c.v. studio is the Yamaha RM1X sequencer the only sounds i use from it's tone engine are the drums which then have a dedicated Behringer composer pro compressor & an ultrafex 2 permanently chained together , and if needed i'll double or triple up drum sounds with the old dusty but trusty Yamaha A3000 v2 sampler.
I also use my diy modular drum synth with 2 MPS / 2 Synares / 1 Bass ++ / 3 DS8's.

I've used a Minimoog in the past to create kick and hi-hat style noises...and recently started using VSTi versions to do the same. Also use Battery, Stylus RMX, Korg Legacy DE., XP-80, something2000 - really whatever has something close to what I'm looking for. I used to have a Yamaha RM-50 that was a really versatile rhythm module...you had control over filter and tuning of the elements used. I also had an M3R that had some really good drum sounds in it. I use the Korg Legacy s/w to cover that now.

Korg has supposedly re-released the Wavedrum and I've been thinking about picking up one of those.
