So far, the only online community that I saw in which reaction was overwhelmingly positive is the iPhone game developer community. They are excited about the larger screen size and faster processor.

I also think fingerpainters are happy to get a larger pad. There is a community out there right now for iPhone painters.

Yeah, my thoughts too.

That was a very insightful article BTW (or was it inciteful?) Smile

Not long before Jobs introduced the iPad, Apple killed the ioLibrary, a neat way of transferring audio samples between applications, even from different developers. That is not the kind of control I want over something as potentially powerful as this. I'm with Peter Kirn. All the way.

One thing that was mentioned (in the comments after that article,I think) was the possibility of a multi-touch usb peripheral. THAT would rock.It would actually be pretty stoopid for them to not see the usefulness of that.

I'm sure they do, but it will be available at their leisure.

I'm sure this is only the first step regardless of whether it succeeds or not.I'd bet there's a Mac tablet in the future (or not, what do I know?)
It'll be VERY interesting to see what the next 2 or 3 years hold.

I just wish that the competition would get their finger out! There have been announcements but nothing tangible yet. But yes, even Linux will be in on this eventually, it looks to be the next medium-sized thing. Wink

I can't speak for other sw, but in SuperCollider, you would de-zipper the controls by wrapping them in Lag. Max/MSP has something similar in speedlimit if I'm not mistaken.

If you're designing a custom touch interface, it helps to have custom software Smile

Unfortunately this approach is no so good it you are dealing with timing, for instance a sequencer running on the iWhatever.

I still get the feeling that the iPad is a solution in search of a problem, but that's what I said about the iPhone 2 or 3 years ago too. It'll find a niche, and even might become more popular by V2. I'm not going for V1...

App support will be key. It'd be very cool to have slightly bigger keyboards on the soft synth apps, and something like TouchOSC could actually be useful.

The lack of IO (more specifically, the docking port being the only IO) is a concern, especially the line in problem. But this is no different to the phone right now.

Maybe when someone actually stumps up for one of these things we can hear more about what it's like.

http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/

Seems like a simple and fairly cheap way of getting some touch input. MAX, Pd, or other programs to convert to MIDI....

I have one of those that I use with Kyma, Osculator handles it nicely for routing to other apps via OSC.

Should say only the pen though, the touch stuff only seems to work as a virtual mouse kind of thing. I haven't worked out a way of getting at the data yet!

PureData has an HID module that is simple, and exposes the raw data from the HID device (any HID device)

Try this to start with:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData/GameControllers

You can then send OSC data, MIDI, etc. as you wish!

Despite what I said about using an iPad as a wireless DAW controller, I've been thinking more about getting a Korg NanoKONTROL as a cheap control surface for Logic:

But a multitouch Bamboo looks like an intriging alternate choice.

I really like this new iThingie. I've been looking for a wearable computer or something better than a netbook to carry around with me. I have some questions about it, though.

o How much does an unlimited 3G plan cost?
o Is there an app for streaming to our radio server?
o Will a music programming language app such as Puredata run on it?

I may have to wait until the end of the year to get one, in which time the apps I want may become available. In the mean time I can save up for it (I hope)...

Les
