Composer and lute player Jozef van Wissem is renowned for his unusual approach to the renaissance and baroque lute, cutting and pasting classical pieces, reversing melodies, and adding electronics & processed field recordings to the lute's rich, historic soundfield. The unusual wedlock of composition and improvisation creates an unheard amalgam of contemporary folk and late renaissance music. van Wissem has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of 17th-century lute literature and 21st-century composition. Although he uses subtle electronic sound manipulation, van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Yet his music does not progress in a traditional linear fashion, nor does it lead to predictable climaxes. In addition to being a composer, van Wissem runs the Incunabulum label and performs extensively around the world, has worked with improvisor/guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama, sound-sculpturist Maurizio Bianchi, experimentalists Smegma, among others, and has lectured at at Wesleyan universtity, Mills College and Cambridge University on "the liberation of the lute”.
