I'm going to be researching this on the mighty Goog but thought I'd tap the wisdom here as well.

Here's the problem, originating from this thread . I want to clock a 4017 (the 'audio rate' input of the 4017/4051 melody generator) from four different clocks, each one is the output of a 4093 oscillator, and each one has a different frequency.

Only one clock will be active at a time because the clocks are gated by a separate 4017.

I've tried just connecting the four outputs to one breadboard line and send that as the clock but it doesn't work.

I've tried summing resistors(which will work going to an audio amp) but the resistor values must be too high because the 4017 isn't clocking from it.

So I'm guessing that it needs some kind of buffer on the output of each 4093? Either that or do smaller summing resistors and insert some kind of Schmitt Trigger right before the 4017?

Thanks

The clocks are gated how? By making a 4093 input high? Be aware that the 4093 is a NAND as well as a schmitt -- if either input is low, the output is high. Summing outputs through resistors or, for that matter, diodes, will result in a constant high as long any of the oscillators are disabled by a low.

Rather than try to figure out the right combinations of inverters, ORs, ANDs or whatever, why not put an analog switch from a 4066 between each oscillator out and the 4017 clock input? That way, the enables from the other 4017 lets each clock reach the arpeggiating 4017 in turn. The oscillators could free run or also be enabled by the bit that enables the 4066.

Clever! Much easier than I was making it, cheers.
