here are a few controllers I've built in the past year...

the tabletar... made with a wacom drawing tablet.

this one is an array of 5 infrared sensors...

both of them interface with the computer using a phidgets interface kit and control max/msp patches.

Very cool stuff. The IR array looks like something I'd have at a festival or a museum where people can go and wave their hands around and music and coloured light comes out.

I tend to find that IR controllers to be better for trigger than for subtle gesturing... so I agree with an installation setting as being ideal.
