Here is the score to Crater Dust on the E-M Forum (it's a .doc file). This is the piece that we played in our collaboration on Sunday at EM2010. It works well as a jam for 2 to 4 electro-musicians. Delicate Monster has been playing it for 20 years.

I hope you can try it with your friends or your group. If you do, send me a link to a recording so I can hear what you do with it.

To hear what it can sound like, download a version by Delicate Monster at: drop.io/craterdust

Enjoy!

Steve

Thanks for posting it. Really enjoyed the EM2010 version I heard Smile
I hope I'll be able to play it someday, just don't know enough about scales and such yet.

PHOBos, You don't really have to know all your scales to play this. Because there's only three notes in each key, you could just write out the notes. And because it's such a simple pattern, you play it a few times and you see the pattern. Even though I do know all my scales, when I play Crater Dust I'm thinking, "Ok, I want to go to A flat now; a whole step below A flat is g flat, a minor third below that is E flat, and then a fifth down to A flat." That's all there is to it. And, of course, going up a fourth each time.

You can play Crater Dust without doing the modulation--just agree on the ground rules among the musicians. It's just a different effect with the modulation. Or just agree to do three or four related keys at random. That would also work.

That said, I really do love the modulations. We played Crater Dust for a long time only in D. Then we played it going up the circle of 5ths. But when we went backwards, up 4ths, we knew we had it. By going up a 4th (down a 5th) each time (to the sub-dominant), the effect is a sinking feeling. The whole tonal landscape just sinks and sinks and sinks. It's a subtle subconscious feeling, but that's what gives it its special musical character.

But if you're playing it for fun (why else?), do it any way you want. Take some of the ideas and mess with it. I'm just trying to seed the electro-landscape with some new approaches to composition.

Steve
