Can a switching mode power supply be reliably used in the context of a modular synthesizer? Has it been done before?

Modern switching supplies switch at a high enough frequency that they work well with synths.

The Buchla 200e system uses three cleverly placed switchers to generate +/- 15 v, and +5 v.

Sure, why not? They may end up being a bit more expensive, but the increased efficiency, lower weight, and decreased heat are all nice benefits.

I haven't designed with them, but things like the Cincon CHB series look pretty easy to use. I think that these are fairly similar to the ones Buchla uses, in form factor at least.
