Dude, you should totally be a guest on Programmed Hell some time. I think it would be a neat mix. |
Cheers Damien. That could be fun!

Hi, I am wondering about volume - loudness of my recording, I am happy with the sound quality, my recording does seem quieter than other peoples sessions, maybe because I use no compression? Listeners can always reach for the volume control button ( or maybe I should slightly boost the master volume without compression? )... Just some thoughts/questions. |

I'd say, yes it is a bit quieter. This is better than digital distortion from being too loud. As for future files, if you have a wave editor, I'd simply normalize them. As I understand it, normalize looks at the peak amplitudes, sets the top to whatever setting you choose, and then adjusts the levels of the entire file. As I understand compression, you can process levels differently--i.e., lower loudness and raise softness (pardon the over simplification--perhaps others can elaborate).
To me your set doesn't seem to have a problem with having too wide a range for which compression might be helpful. I'd suggest normalization should do it. (Get others' opinions, too.)
For performance time, better to be a little to soft than have digital distortion--but that's just my opinion.

Hi Steve ! Thanks for the feedback about "volume etc" that I was wondering about. Yes I agree much better a wee quiet than distorting from loudness.
Will look into which programmes I have that may help with normalization of loudness as you call it. I am into keeping as much dynamic range as possible so have so far avoided all compression. As well as all sharing music with each other here, new friendships etc another great aspect is this learning from each other especially with tech stuff like this question. Loving e-m
This was a lot of fun to do my first official e-m show, and I was very happy with my performance and loved all the other players music and sounds , such a diversity - GREAT! |

Normalization of loudness seems to involve compression, what Steve mentioned is usually called volume normzlization I think. Anyway, audacity can do the latter. I usually try to keep some headroom too, and then before I post a track I do a volume normalization to -0.1 dB - sometimes I'll shave off a couple of peaks before that. _________________ Jan

Thanks Zreentoyz I did give this a play and it certainly is louder overall, it does seem like a real artform to retain as much dynamic range as possible and to some degree still keep up with the loudness levels people are now used to.
Jan that sounds very similar to what I just did with this article also thanks for your reply, and thanks Steve |

Hi!
I have check sound in video and did compare with sound from digital recorder (recorded from mixer main outut) the sound from camcorder is much better! I need to upload here a new version - or just use compressor to improove previously downloaded sound from streaming set! _________________ http://ziart.kz
