Sinister Tone Generator Subject description: Bass drone synth
Hello people I made a little drone synth. It is not especially clever and maybe not the first time someone's thought of this set-up but it is especially fun to play and nice to look at. This specific one that I built is for sale, with all proceeds going to a good cause. Further details are up on my site. Please enjoy.
Here's a sample, with reverb and filtering added from 1:18

excellent work and very clever usage of all of the 6 inverters. I really like how you paired them together with those little 10k seperation pots, I don't think I've seen that before and it sounds fantastic.
What kind of good cause are you supporting? _________________ There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I don't know about that. Having oscillators track while maintaining an offset ("separation") seems pretty clever to me. That center off switch might cause problems, though. Shorting either output directly to ground doesn't seem like a good idea. _________________ Revenge is a dish best served with a fork... to the eye
Thanks for your comments esteemed brethren! Any ideas for a better way of switching one or the other voice off without grounding the output? I guess if I ground the inputs of inverters C and D instead of the outputs that should still work, right?

That would then be grounding the oscillators' outputs. (Thru the diodes.) Instead of grounding the Inputs of C or D, wire the switch to +V so it makes C or D In logic 1. That will disable the diode ORing and hold C or D Out at logic 0; the same effect as grounding either output was having, but without the excessive, possibly damaging, current flow.
Nice, compact package, btw. _________________ Revenge is a dish best served with a fork... to the eye

Rich, Would you be so kind as to show us your veroboard design layout too? _________________ ACHTUNG!

I built this (standard four-knob version without filters). It is most excellent and totally awesome. It does my favorite WSG sounds in a smaller package and from a quick afternoon build. Sounds great through a guitar amp with reverb, but I'll try different filters soon.
This unit sold at auction for $120 (NZD). Too cheap in my opinion, but I'm not sore because the money was for charity. I have had better experience selling my stuff as art objects as opposed to off-the-shelf products, I recommend that approach to everyone. Unless of course you've just designed the Next Big Thing and you can mass produce it for $10 a piece, there's just no point targeting the consumer market.
Hey Les I just finished writing a tutorial on how I make my laser-cut electronics enclosures like this one, thought you might be interested.
It covers the process from circuit design and layout, to parts + controls placement, to laser-cut construction techniques, including a few tricky things like allowing for kerf and dog-boning your internal corners to prevent cracking.

rich, my compliments on your enclosure technique, it's very well developed. I like how the dog bone cutout serves to relieve the stress of the fastener, and also fits the fastener.
You know what occurs to me is that you could make other non-rectangular shapes of box this way. You could even make lego-style U-shaped boxes or consoles of some sort. I guess now that you've mastered this technique, the rest is limited only by your imagination!

Hi!
I made a sinister tone augmented. The start was Rich design, I change the range of two oscillators, add a mixer to get more balance when both side are on. I also add a three shapes LFO on each side (borrow from mfos). Si here it is.
