So I had this idea to create a keyboard that gets all of it's sounds from classic game system chips. Basically, it would have an NES chip, a gameboy chip, a C64 chip, and a couple others. They would be the wave sources for the patches. It would be loaded with knobs to tweak the sounds. Mod, Cuttoff, Res, Pitch bend, Octave, Tremolo (with rate and shape control), distortion, and Portamento control, all with lfo layering and patch saving and recall. I think I'd make all the raw tones as presets and then have a huge bank for saving created combinations with effects and layering and stuff.

I don't know anything about how chips work, though. Would this even be feesable? I don't know if chips need a data signal or if a current can be applied and they will produce a tone. Any advice? Does this already exist?

that sounds very ambitious especially if you don't know how to do it. These chips are interfaced digitally with a microcontroller or microprocessor. This could be a good place to start: http://code.google.com/p/4bitsynth/
