Old Vinyl

I've never really collected anything in my life. On a recent stop at a thrift store while visiting family in MA, I decided to start collecting old vinyl recordings of music by classical, romantic and baroque composers. These are the first five in my collection. They were all 25 cents - dug them out of a box.

Make sure you listen to them too!
They're all good, but it would be far better to have more up-to-date recordings of them on CD.

Well, for listening, sure, but I'm into the whole "wow, this is really old" aspect of the physical product.
You know what's really LAME is that I don't have a turntable. I'll get one, though...

Switched On Moog - love it! That's actually my next project when I'm done sorting out all my old tapes. I'm doing a cover album of folk music with an electronic twist.
So if anyone wants to recommend some good folk music, I'll have a listen and see if I want to cover it.

I hate LPs. I love CDs.
I used to wear out LPs and wind up buying the same album several times. I can't stand the sound of a worn phonograph record. Later I'd buy an LP and immediately tape it but the tape always lost just a little sound.
The exception to nasty noisy LPs became known to me thanks to Isao Tomita. "Snowflakes" was issued on a premium vinyl disc, unlike the recycled vinyl they were putting pop albums on.
So then I started hunting down "Original Masters" half-speed mastered LPs which were more expensive, hard to find and had a small catalog.
I was so happy when CDs came out. I still have some of the first ones I bought and they, of course, sound as good as new.
Whatever sonic superiority LPs might have is pretty much lost on my wooden ears. With good speakers I don't feel like I'm missing anything vital and I sure don't miss the snap crackle and pop.
I still have a box of LPs but I made CD versions of the essential ones that were never released on CD.
More than the medium I miss some of the old labels, specifically Charisma and Passport. They distributed some wonderful original music. Major labels today are unadventurous, thanks to greedy stockholders and cowardly executives.
Do I miss the artwork side of LPs? Of course! I have actually pruchased a few LPs for that specific reason. For example, I have a Synergy LP to look at while I listen to the Synergy CD. Best of both worlds!

Is that anything like the Mozart record I posted in the OP, the "long playing microgroove, nonbreakable masterworks record"? That thing feels like a plate and does not bend at all.

Hmm CDs? Is that the stuff in the little boxes by the movies and console games in the shops? 
Seriously though - I play a vinyl record here every now and then, but there's a large dose of nostalgia involved. CDs certainly ruled in their time.

I don't know if this qualifies as folk, but I'd recommend Richard Thompson, and Incredible String Band, and Fairport Convention, for the instrumention, and the instrumentals, and the vocal harmonies.
Plenty of vinyl from the 70's and 80's down in the basement. Turntable down there, too, and my son still buys some vinyl to play on it. The needle is as old as sin.
I still listen to plenty of CDs, especially in the car on the way to work. I'll be damned if I'll let myself get in the habit of listening to mp3s of my favorite music. MP3 be damned!

I have about 900 vinyl albums which I have bought on and off since I was 14.
Most of them are works which I want to keep, as I have sold a lot over the years. I'm not a "vinyl is best" fanatic (well mastered CD's sound excellent), but I have rare music on vinyl which is difficult to get.
There are many reasons why vinyl is not the ideal format (diameter loss, RIAA curves, poor quality plastic etc.) but many CD's suffered from poor mastering and transfer and didnt take advantage of the format's advantages.
I just stuck on a 35 year old copy of Can's Tago Mago (Mute are re-issuing all Can's re-masters BTW) and although there are occasional clicks and pops the music sounds very clear, full and up-front.
I also picked up a 2nd hand copy of Carlos' original Clockwork Orange LP and was blown away by the production and pressing of a 40 year old record!
I couldn't live without CD's uncompresssed digital audio though, and its a very good time to pick up re-issues of experimental works... |

++. I don't have an MP3 player (other than my computers). For road trips, it's CD all the way. I have two sun-visor CD holders, both strapped to the passenger sun visor (driver selecting CD = kaboom).

Actually it's been a topic in the news here for quite a while. I didn't think it would happen at first, but then local record shops started popping out of existence one by one. When I moved to this town there were maybe ten shops dealing mainly with selling new CDs within walking distance from here. Now I know of a single one (though it's a stretch since they also sell a lot of second hand vinyl), which is run by an enthusiast, and I am happily surprised each time I walk past it and see that it's still there.

heh I could have written that (except for selling). When I first saw this
topic I was tempted to react, but was afraid it might came across as 'look
how many albums I got'. My collection ranges from older, mostly 60s,
music. classical, soundtracks, early electro, to hip hop, drum'n'bass,
gabber, digital hardcore, and the more popular dance music (prodigy,
chemical brothers, fatboy slim etc.). And all kinds of stuff in between. Also
some different colors, sizes, shapes, picture discs, and a laser etched one
by Speedy J . And a bunch of Caroliner Rainbow records which come
in the most original packaging.
btw. collecting vinyl started for me from being a DJ.

Actually it's been a topic in the news here for quite a while. I didn't think it would happen at first, but then local record shops started popping out of existence one by one. We still have Young Ones down the street from where I teach. Most of my substantial Miles Davis and John Coltrane collection of CDs came from there, others from Borders Books, which no longer exists.

No, didnt mean it as a boast! - it just strange to realise that a lot of people
these days dont listen to a physical product at all, which for me, kind of devalues the experience of listening..I like the ritual of using a plastic disk! |

For some reason - perhaps in a weird form of invert geekiness - I find the ability to produce tremendous ranges of sound with a large dynamic range using almost microscopic grooves traced by a needle in a composite plastic disk more astounding than converting a stream of digital bits.
