A6 LCD Display Corrupted? |
|
|
Hey there!
Been a long-time lurker on this forum, great info! Now I have an issue and wanted to ask the group.
The other day I had the A6 turned on and was working on a patch, when I noticed my LCD screen was a little dusty. I took my finger and lightly wiped the dust off of the screen when the LCD blinked off and back on for a moment. After the flash, the display had random dots throughout the LCD, and made the smallest font (the ones under the softknobs/buttons) almost unreadable.
There aren't a ton of dots, maybe a couple dozen, and they are in almost-horizontal lines across the screen.
I tried a soft reset, a hard reset, and an OS reload, and the dots are still there. I also removed and reseated most of the ribbon cables connected to the LCD and the front panel-left PCB board, to no avail.
My best hypothesis, after reading through the service manual, is that the EPROM that stores the code that the 87C52 uses to render the LCD probably got a static electricity charge from my finger rubbing across it. Seems like a stretch, but it was telling it happened immediately after I swiped my finger on it.
So, dear forum members, please tell me I don't have to buy a whole new front panel-left PCB board for $260 from instrumentalparts.com. Does someone have the knowledge and tools to reprogram the EPROM with the original code from theirs? I'd be willing to pay for this help.
The good news is that the synth still works wonderfully otherwise. No missing voices or other strangeness, but the display is definitely hosed.
I'd be happy to post photos of the display if that helps troubleshoot it.

i often cleaned my screen the way you described, never had any problem like that.
( maybe i was lucky ..)
i don't know what to do about it , guess a normal good repair station could repair the display for a little less ( isn't just the display itself a bit damaged ?) |

Thanks for the reply Sunny!
No, I'm pretty sure the screen is fine. When running through the diagnostics, there's an LCD check that turns all the LCD pixels black. That works fine, so as far as I can tell, all of the pixels operate correctly. But the data that's coming from the LCD controller is scrambled for some pixels.
I'm away for work, but when I get back I'll take some photos and post them. |
