I have not explored all the possibilities in this video, it is possible to get it to make rhythmic beeps and growls, additionally one can use an individual oscillator group (there are two groups of three) for a less distorted/mad sound.
In this video the case is still unfnished, see the attached photos for the end result Smile There is also a circuit diagram attached.
The case is real wood and the knobs are from old radios, some bits of tin can were used too along with many scavenged parts for the circuit.

The circuit is very simple: just light controlled oscillators and a mixer really, with a bit of heterodyning thrown in to make things more interesting! Very Happy

Looking at it now, I can see where I could have added light sensitive volume control, oh well, I'll impliment that next time!

Cool!

You get a lot of bang for your buck with such a simple circuit.

Here are some tips I discovered when I was messing with a similar circuit. In mine I used 1 inch long pieces of heat schrink tubing that fit over the ldr's so they respond a little better and you can aim them in different directions.

I also used a votlage starve pot wich really adds a whole new flavor to the sound. Super easy, just a voltagedivider going directly to pin 14 of the 40106.

An extra advantage of using the heat schrink tubing is that you can fit a 5mm led in there perfectly. I once used a super cheap hallmark electronic greeting card, just ripped off the speaker and used the 6 leds on the LDR's, great for cool patterns.

Keep up the good work, Im really enjoying these threads.

I like it Exclamation

I picture it in a room with a fluttering fluorescent light. Cool

Thanks everyone Very Happy

Tjookum: I intend to make some home-made vactrols in just that fashion (But with tape and wire because I cant afford heat shrink like you rich folks Wink) Thanks for the tips

Draal: I acctually made this in a room with a flickering filament bulb Laughing it's about 50 or 60 years old and it hasn't broken, just gotten flickery.

Mosc: Thankyou oh great wizard of the electro-music!

P.S. I'm too poor to keep everything I make, should I post the link to the ebay auction for it here or in a separate thread in the "for sale" section?

Good idea. You might try to sell these thingies here. If you're lucky, you can save some Ebay fees. It's up to you.

Thanks for the suggestion mosc, I may try that with some better stuff but I can never gauge a good price for them Laughing
