Theremin and MIDI are not very compatible; MIDI was designed for a typical keyboard layout, and the theremin is a monophonic, gliding pitch with a wide range. If there is such a thing, it will depend on pitch bend to track the glide, and is thus dependent on the target synth for it's success. It will also depend on your playing style.
However, there may be a possibility that a continous controller or NRPN (non-registered parameter number) can do the trick. OSC (open sound control) may be worth looking into too.
You will simply need something that can track pitch (pitch-to-midi, voice-to-midi) and convert that into suitable data. Some theremins also output CV which can be digitized. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

I must dis-agree. Theremin and Midi go extremly well together. Check out this Theremin Instrument at: http://www.wave-theremin.com/theremin-instrument.php to get an appreciation as to "how well" they go together. Look for the theremin videos. |

Hmm, the original post in this thread seems to have been deleted...
Anyways, welcome to the forum ben2012ben!
I am happy to be proved wrong. I can't remember why I was so sceptical in my previous reply. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

Hi,
Did you already check out the AudioCubes? Every AudioCube has 4 infrared high speed sensors, one on each side, which can measure the distance from your hand to the sensors. This data can then be sent as MIDI CCs to your daw using the midibridge app (an application that comes with the audiocubes). You could say that an audiocube is a kind of 4D optical theremin

just wanted to chime in that the roland vp-70 does pitch -> midi, as well as a 4 voice midi controlled pitch shifter. these are older units now and can be had reasonably cheaply. They also distort nicely when the input is slammed.
I understand this is what was used on the opening of michael jacksons thriller. |
