CALL FOR PAPERS AND PERFORMANCES
Live Interfaces is a conference on live, technology-mediated interaction in performance. The conference seeks to investigate cross-disciplinary understandings of performance technology with a particular focus on issues related to the notion of liveness in interaction.
Live Interfaces will consist of paper and poster presentations, performances and workshops over two days. Researchers, theorists and artists from diverse fields are encouraged to participate, including: digital performance, live art, computer music, choreography, music psychology, interaction design, human computer interaction, digital aesthetics, computer vision, smart materials and augmented stage technology.
We invite submissions addressing the conference theme of technology-mediated live interaction in performance, and suggest the following indicative topics:
Audience perception/interaction
Biophysical sensors
Brain-computer interfaces
Computer vision/real-time video in performance
Cross-modal perception/illusion
Digital dramaturgy/choreography/composition
Digital performance phenomenology
Gesture recognition and control
Historical perspectives
Live coding in music, video animation and/or dance
Participatory performance
Performance technology aesthetics
Redefining audience interaction
Tangible interaction
We invite the following submission types:
Papers for oral presentation: Please submit an abstract, with indicative length of 500 words. If your proposal is accepted following peer review, we will ask you to submit the full paper (min. 2,000 - max. 5,000 words) before the conference. Authors will be allocated at least 15 minutes to present the work during the conference, plus 5 minutes for questions.
Papers for poster presentation: Please submit an abstract, with indicative length of 500 words. If your proposal is accepted following peer review, we will ask you to submit a short paper (min. 1,000 - max. 2,000 words) before the conference. Authors are welcome to demonstrate technology as part of their poster presentation, by prior arrangement.
Proposals for performances. Please submit a proposal of 1-2 pages which describes the performance. The proposal should relate the performance to the conference theme, and describe the underlying concept, the live interaction technology used, any audience interaction and the duration of the performance. Please list clearly all technical and space requirements. Artists are strongly encouraged to include links to audio/visual media of the work or of past work (for example using youtube.com, soundcloud.com or archive.org) to aid peer review. The primary venue for performances will be the Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall in the School of Music, University of Leeds.
Please format all paper submissions using either the Word or LaTeX template. All submissions should be as a PDF file.
Extended abstracts must be submitted electronically via the on-line submissions system by midnight (GMT+1) on the 17th June 2012. All submissions will be subject to cross-disciplinary peer review, and notified of acceptance by 1st July.
Accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in a further round of peer review towards a journal special edition (details to be announced shortly).
