I want to get started with electronic music after playing guitar for years and wanting to do something new.

So is the korg emx-1 something to get started with?

I saw it in futuremusic magazine, looked it up on youtube and liked what I saw.

But is there any other method to getting started out there? I dont like fooling with software synths, although albeton live is kinda cool.

Whats everybodys thoughts on it?

One thing I liked was that there was several different types of music on the videos.

I've only used an ESX-1, but the layouts are pretty similar I think. What struck me was how immediate it was, I looked through the manual pretty quickly and was up and running more or less after that. So if you just want to have a feel for making synth loops and beats with some knob tweaking (important to me) I think the Electribes are perfect. I've also heard praise of the predecessor EA-1, so if you find one of those for cheap that might be worth a try.

/Stefan

Re: other methods - there are a million ways. If the Electribe has caught your eye I'd say go for that, and if it doesn't work sell it (synths generally have ok second hand value) and see if something else catches your eye. Browsing around here on the forums might be a good idea, lots of different threads on the "I'm just starting out, what should I do?" topic, with varied answers.

I have a Korg Electribe... I bought it from Craigslist. It was the first sequencer I had ever used, and I really enjoyed it for making backup beats and loops. If you're a lone guitarist or any other instrument really, and you want to jam with yourself & don't have a laptop & Ableton, it will be great for you!

It does have limitations; the sound palette is limited, and you can't stray too far from the "beat" type genres. I got serious about composing, so I kind of outgrew mine. I'm wondering if I should sell it...

Other synths for beginners? I see that Casio has a synth, the XW-P1. They're calling it a synth because it has sound modification knobs, and I believe a sequencer/arpeggiator. The "serious" electronica people I have talked to don't think much of it, but I think these guys are snobs Wink . If I was a beginner I'd check this out. It is $499. Also there is a synth called the M-Audio Venom for the same price and I'm thinking about it if my Novation X-station can't be fixed.

Both of these synths have 49 keys. The other 'entry-level' synths out there all seem to have 37 keys, that is 3 octaves. For a musician who wants to PLAY, that seems confining to me.

Good luck!
