Subject description: mounting components to aluminum panel
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

So, I've had trouble lately with mounting components to aluminum panels and boxes. I try to line the comp side with elec tape, but sometimes the build doesn't work because a programming port or some other comp grounds or shorts to the panel.

I'm wondering, with MFOS designs, should I mount all comps to the panel? Should I line the comp side w/ something? I know Ray says that pots and jacks NEED to ground to the panel, but I'm nervous to mount everything and get to the end and the build not work because something is grounding that shouldn't be. Anyone have advice? Thanks

I am not 100% sure as to what you are calling components. However, Ray´s circuit boards shouldnt be touching the panels. If you join the PCB to the panel using Ray´s brackets, for example, then the screws in the ore-drilled holes wont short any components. You do need to connect the panels to earth.Other people such as Oakley have a separate "panel" earth to keep the signal earth clean. Use a panel earth and run it back to the PSU earth.

Thank you for the reply! When I say components, I mean the panel components (ie pots, switches, jacks, etc). I'm not sure which of these components should be in contact with the panel earth. All of them? I use offsets to keep the PCB off of the panel and keep the PCB earth separate from the panel earth. I'm just looking for clarification for which panel components will interfere with each other when they are all in contact with the panel earth.

A rule of thumb would be, any component that has an earth connected to it will need some metal to metal contact with the front panel.

As I use bananas for most of my jacks with Ray`s designs they only contact the front panel via an insulated contact point- usually plastic to panel metal. Pots will have an earth connection and will be joined to the panel via their metal body. So just mounting them normally will make the connection. Again there are exceptions. I use OMEG pots and they are plastic bodied so just the earth connection of their 3 pins goes to earth as per the wiring instructions is made. And this all works OK.
