I was trying to create a similar patch and stumbled upon yours. I incorporated your noise osc's idea into the one I've been working on. Your idea was the missing piece to my puzzle--thanks! I think it sounds pretty realistic.

My approach was to create several voices with different attacks, lfo rates, pitch modulations, etc, to try and simulate multiple voices. I only get 7 voices with this version, and my G2 is expanded. Delete voice #5 first if you need to reduce DSP.

I also tried to make the attack and release envelopes almost instant, like a mellotron. I've included a lot of info in the textpad.
