ADC converter - which forum? Subject description: Which forum to ask advice about ADC for synth experimenting? |
|
|
I'm looking for an analog-to-digital convertor (probably an IC, not a system), 16 bits, up to 20kHz or 50kHz or so, preferably with a built-in anti-aliasing filter. I'm looking for something easy to use, that I can just drop in and play around with, without adding a lot of support circuitry. I have experience with the 80C51 and some other embedded devices, and SPI (serial) interfacing so an spi device would be good. Googling for this yields a huge number of results; don't know how to narrow it down. Which sub-forum is best for this?
Thanks! |

Hi Fred, I'd recommend you google "i2s" ( short for inter-IC sound, not to be confused with i2c which is completely different). It's by far the most commonly used interface for pumping audio data from an adc to a DSP or whatever. If you can't use it you'll drastically reduce your options. If you do use it you'll need to think about how to provide the word clock and bit clock (and in many cases also an even faster "master clock", but that's specific to each adc, not part of the i2s standard).
Next thing, yes there is a huge range of audio ADCs available but you can probably narrow it down using these criteria:
- Easy availability in small volume at your favorite component distributor; I.e. start your search at somewhere like mouser/Digikey, rather than actual manufacturer of ADCs
- available in a package you can solder easily ( thru hole is quite rare for audio adc's, for example)
- built-in anti-aliasing is also no that common
Hope this helps, good luck! |

Alternatively, start with something like the "codec shield"
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11290
and customize to your needs - schematics are available at the site.
"Codec" in this context means a combination of adc and dac. |
