View count Subject description: Just a friendly question or two |
|
|
I realised this when I read a post by someone who noticed that 74 had read his posts but none had replied.
Could something be done about the view count? Is it useful as it is? I check it every now and then, only to realise that duh this isn't real people. While I would love to think that 70 persons jumped at my post about implementing rabbit bazookas in ChucK the instant I posted it, I know that that is a lie - it's probably almost all bots.
I'd love to know the amount of real people who read posts, but I realize that this is probably impossible to calculate for all users, so is it possible to show the amount of registered users who read posts, either instead of the existing view count or in addition? _________________ Antimon's Window

Most forum software will try to filter out bot traffic from its reports, but I don't know how good this version of phpbb is at doing it. If it is up to date, then it is probably about as good as you are going to get.
Only counting registered user could be done with a bit of modification, but that number would be even less useful. I access the site on 2 different computers and my cell, and I am often not logged in until I post something. So you will then end up with a very low read count. _________________ JacobWatters.com |

Tell me the bots
I mean, what IP addresses are bots, now, and which ones tomorrow?
Adding filtering would be pretty useless if not maintained - maybe a better option would be to leave out the view counts
I was 17 and now I'm 21 or so - a couple of edits counts up as well ... _________________ Jan

Ok ok, I hear ya. I just feel that the view count number doesn't work very well, I guess there's nothing to be done about it. _________________ Antimon's Window

You have to be careful with robots.txt. You don't want search engines to stop indexing pages. This site ranks awesome in google right now. _________________ JacobWatters.com |
