Controlling music with gestures

I’m part of a research group which is developing a new product that allows the control of music parameters with gestures. Our solution doesn’t need any device attached to the users’ body. We want to allow total freedom, so this will be compatible with the most popular digital audio workstations in the market, such as Ableton or Fruity Loops, in order for the artist to keep using what he feels confortable with.
With this, you will be able to control filters, launch samples, change any effect by just moving, for example, your hands and arms (just to name a few possibilities).
The gestures which control the parameters of the music can be mapped by the artist, so every dj can choose what works best for him. In parternship with some professional djs, we will work on a wide variety of cool movements and provide them in the software package, which will be detected with a precision of centimeters, in order to maintain the quality of what you do.

Our main objective is to provide djs with a new creative solution that allows a new level of interaction with music and the audience, maintaining the quality of what is created with this technique. This is definitely not a substitute of tradicional methods! It is just a new feature that can be used along side with all your other gear. We’re providing a new solution to do a lot of amazing things in your shows.

erm .. why would you have to be a DJ for this?

I remember having seen something that was called 'Inverted dance' where a couple of video camera's were used to track people's movements in order to generate music - this must have been around 1990 or so.

That's true, this could be used in other genres of music, and not only by djs Yeah that was a cool concept but, at that time, technology couldn't allow us to do something so precise as what we are developing. Our technology uses a new generation of cameras that can track precise movements at the right timing. We also offer the possibility to introduce some effects with random dance movements, but this is just one of the many options. We leave it up to you to decide what to use when you want. It'easy to switch from precise movement tracking for controling music parameters to using whathever random dance moves you want to generate music, much like as you said
