Where can I find info on speech synthesizers? |
|
|
Hi everyone,
I went to the Ontario Science Center and found this exhibit. http://www.dse.nl/~evoluon/coffee.htm
It was very cool and fun, and I started looking for similar synthesizers/modules that I could make. Nothing yet, but perhaps you can help me. If you know of something that operates on the same concept, please let me know.
Thank you! |

Thanks for the links. I'm looking for something free of software, as I read somewhere that the "Coffee Machine" was made entirely of discrete components. Elsewhere, someone told me that likely what was happening was similar to Bell Labs' VODER in 1939, where noise is filtered to make fricatives and plosives, and a sawtooth or square wave is filtered to make vowel sounds.
Any idea how I could find that information, and how to sequence it? I would love to be able to make different words by rearranging modules or cables. |

That's helpful, but it doesn't give me any idea on how to start design, and doesn't cover consonant sounds. I'll keep looking, and I've contacted the science center to see if they have any schematics, since they apparently did repairs on it at some time before the 90s, after Evoluon had given it to them. |

Jim Patchell designed a vocal formant filter PCB, and Fonik built one from Jim's posted files. I believe it's voltage controllable, which gets you a little further along the way towards good control, and AFAIK the design doesn't use any rare ICs.
I don't have a link, but search here or on muffwiggler and you should find something.
cheers,

I have built two of these on Jim's PCBs, the 2nd one (for someone else) sounded amazing, my one seems to have an issue somewhere. Definitely vocal like sounds but no speech synthesizer.
Anyway, they use CA3280s, quite a few of them.
I also built a redesign of the Ai Cybernetic model 1000 Speech synth, details are here -

I should point out the filter needs work....another project i should re-visit one day
The original manual is here -

schematic on pgs 41 & 43
and let's not forget the VOSIM

Has anyone ever built the chatterbox? That article has been around for years but I have never heard of anybody actually building one.
At one stage Randaleem contacted the designers who gave him permission to do a PCB run, but we all know how that ended up.
Anyway, maybe it is time to do it? |

Yes, and Andrew YOU are the man to do it!
I'm up for a PCB, obviously.
Cheers,
A. |
