Good pitch-shifters have inbuilt auto-correlators that adjust the buffer size/crossfading to the measured periodicity of the incoming signal, thus minimizing intermodulation artefacts. The G2 pitch shifter is a trivial design that doesn't do this -hence the "scary" sound.

True auto-correlation for complex signals is impossible on the G2. Monophonic pitch detection however is possible (within reason), but you still need to design pitch-shifter algorithm that adjusts its buffer-size accordingly.
