Instant error window cascade requiring TASKKILL? |
|
|
(OS is Win 7 x64 btw)
I would surely love to give WREN a spin-
but after following the directions as shown in the FAQ and attempting to run it,
I am immediately greeted by a cascade of (what I assume to be identical repeated) error windows,
the last of which reads
Access violation of address 0070BE58 in module 'wren.exe'. Read of address 00000028.
The cursor rapidly flickers between the customary arrow and the "Blue Whirl of 'Wait' ".
WREN's killed easily enough from cmd, but that's the only way to do so.
If I missed this already being addressed somewhere, I apologize- but it just seems like something relatively simple that I'm drawing a blank on;
I made sure WREN wasn't being blocked, and it's nesting comfortably in its own folder on C: well away from any Microsoft folders-
and I see nothing here or on the WREN homepage about this problem.. therefore I ask ye kindly for a helping hand _________________ "Before I compose a piece, I walk around it several times, accompanied by myself." -Erik Satie |

Oh dear .. it never does that at home
Not at work either BTW .. having win7-64 there as well .. at home I use win8 ...
Maybe a DLL is missing? Best to download the zip to have everything.
But when you did that and it still crashes .. you could try renaming portaudio.dll ... repeated crashes may indicate it crashes in there and without portaudio.dll it should at least run in legacy mode, be it with lousy latency. _________________ Jan

Thank you for the prompt and helpful reply!
So- after getting completely distracted online due to searching for "PortAudio errors" (but re-acquainting myself with such fun things as Cecilia, SoundGrain , SPEAR etc.)
I did as suggested, and lo and behold, it worked (Hooray!) Now my next newbie source of puzzlement:
From what I can tell, WREN requires a virtual server connection to recieve MIDI messages, using the NetMIDI program.
I start NetMIDI, set my Axiom controller as Rx, my Saffire as Tx (my usual setup for other progs) and der blinkenlights flash appropriately within NetMIDI.
The server's named "new", NetMIDI says the port is 1024.
In WREN's settings, I then set the server to "new", port to 1024, apply, hit the connect button, and WREN's c/r/t blinkenlights show nothing.
I tried closing WREN, and making sure NetMIDI was running before WREN was started- tried the "autoconnect" option to see if that made a difference- no joy.
What am I doing wrong? Sorry for being a pain, but again I'd hate to miss out on the WREN fun due to my own lack of effort.. _________________ "Before I compose a piece, I walk around it several times, accompanied by myself." -Erik Satie |

You run NetMIDI on the same PC I guess as Wren .. in that case in Wren the server should be set to localhost or to 127.0.0.1.
The name as set in NetMidi is just a comment really. Connections should show up in NetMidi as a dotted IP address as well .. in the box left of the lights.
You should set Disable Nagle to on - when that's not the default - I forgot - BTW .. to have a bit less latency.
When you can not get it to work with NetMidi .. it should also be possible to use MidiTangle ... both tools use raw midi over IP. _________________ Jan

Great .. still the PortAudio issue then .. you may be able to find a better working DLL somewhere .. a lot of audio programs use it. Wren looks for a specific name of the DLL (portaudio.dll) so when you want to try another one you'll have to make a renamed copy of it, probably.
May there be some fun in it for you :-)
Edit: added a Wren FAQ entry for this - but it basically just points to this thread here. _________________ Jan

That's what spurred me to sail off into google-land- I knew I have other programs that use PortAudio; but yet couldn't find a DLL for it in any of their folders.
In any case, if I find a working one or some other solution, I'll reply here again that future folks may benefit.
FWIW I haven't been having enormous latency issues, but that may be due to a relatively fast machine (i7 970) and a decent audio interface (Saffire Pro 14, which has its own ASIO drivers).
Thanks again, and maybe I'll have some decent patches/noodles to share after getting comfy with WREN _________________ "Before I compose a piece, I walk around it several times, accompanied by myself." -Erik Satie |
